Negative: Some people weren't very flexible regarding me not being able to make it to something because I had an appointment booked months in advance which I didn't want to wait any longer for. Their response made me angry because I felt like I was being punished for something that was not in my control. Positive: I'm happy that I stood up for myself and told them I wouldn't be rescheduling the appointment. My health is more important than their lack of adequate notice.

Today, I got to catch up with some friends and the way we talk to each other (typical millennial language) and our support for each other made me smile.

@Lost_Space_Explorer5 I just wanted to come onto this thread and thank you for all of the hard work you do on the forums. Despite being in so much pain, you still manage to help others. I'm glad you had an okay day yesterday. Picnics are so much fun! I feel like I haven't had one in ages.

Great thread @Anzelmo! :) 3 things I like about myself: - I'm sure of myself and know who I am. - I speak out about things that matter to me. - I like to have fun and connect with my inner child. 3 things that I like about others: - When people help me with directions when I'm lost. - When people are understanding about my health issues. Some people are and some people aren't, but I appreciate when people try their best to accommodate me. - When people open up to me about what they're going through. It makes me feel like I'm doing something right.

This was a great chat! I've loved reading everyone's answers and experiences. :) Has anyone faced stigma about the treatment they're on? It seems like whenever I tell people about my conditions, there are always some people who try to discourage me from talking about or having the treatment that has been helping me, or something I'd like to try. Some of the comments I've heard are along the lines of: 'That's a nasty drug' 'Why would you want to mess with your body like that?' 'What you know about your treatment is wrong, so you shouldn't talk about why you're having it' (said when I was trying to explain why my doctors suggested having the treatment).

How can stigma negatively impact on those who are already struggling (e.g. barriers to help seeking)? Who is most vulnerable to the harmful effects of stigma? Are there any protective factors against stigma? I think that stigma can discourage people from confiding in other people about their experiences out of fear of what other people would think. I think that it can make it hard for people to seek help for themselves. I read lots of articles about people who felt ashamed and worried about seeking financial support or using food banks during the pandemic because they didn't want to be seen as being 'poor'. I think that one of the factors that can make stigma more harmful is if a person already has low self esteem. During low points of my life, I thought that my struggles weren't as bad as other people's and that I did not deserve to have help. Some protective factors against stigma could include feeling connected to family, friends and other people and having good self esteem.

@Lost_Space_Explorer5 Your point about men being expected to hide their emotions and 'man up' is so true. I think that society often sees men as being providers, workers, etc., while women are seen as being more family-orientated. I was just thinking today about how male carers and the challenges they can face are often not recognised and they can receive less support as a result.

@featuringme I definitely think that the group a person belongs to can make it more likely that they will face stigma. For example, women with physical or mental health symptoms were written off as having 'hysteria' for decades.

What is stigma? What kind of struggles are often stigmatised? Are there groups of people who are more likely to face stigma (e.g. based on their identity, what they do, etc.)? I think that stigma is when other people disapprove of or associate a particular group with bad things. Struggles such as drug or alcohol use, homelessness, mental health issues, chronic pain, functional disorders, certain medical conditions are often stigmatised, amongst lots of kinds of struggles. I definitely think that certain groups of people are more likely to face stigma and that this can be influenced by factors such as their race, gender, culture, sexuality, what they work as, where they live, etc.

Today's Wellbeing activity is great for those in our community who are visual thinkers. Although, everyone else is still welcome to give this one a try! :) When I'm in need of a bit of inspiration, I often find myself scrolling through Google Images, Tumblr or Pinterest. I really like looking at things that motivate me to keep going, remind me of things or people that I care about or just give me a bit of a pick me up. Sometimes, it can be hard to imagine what big concepts like success or happiness can look like to us. Mapping what we want out on paper or creating a collage of our favourite quotes or pictures can sometimes help us get a clearer idea of the future we envision for ourselves. It brings a smile to my face when I look at beautiful words, affirmations, mementos or images I've found or created. :) For this week's Weekly Wellbeing activity: Post an image that motivates or inspires you! Here are some ideas: - A mindmap (e.g., of a word or phrase and things that you associate with that word or phrase) - A quote or affirmation - A fictional character - A celebrity - A place - An artwork - A clipping from an article - A treasured memento - A sticker - A 'power word' or value you'd like to live by - Something that you enjoy doing - A word cloud - A gif - A collage of related ideas or images You can post one picture, or a bunch of them! Additionally, tell us what it is about this image that gives you a boost! Looking forward to seeing everyone's choices! :)

One in five Australians aged from 16 to 85 experience a mental health issue in any given year. While support seeking is growing, with around half of people seeking treatment, we still have a long way to go. It's hard enough trying to get through the day when we're not feeling our best. But a lot of us have had to deal with stigma too. Anyone can perpetuate stigma. You might hear a negative comment about people who are struggling by a passerby, be told something condescending by a medical professional or your parents might be critical of you for seeking help. It's not difficult to see why stigma can be so damaging, but it is something that is so widespread in society that it can be hard to avoid. We are often bombarded with messages about the importance of help-seeking, but sadly, many of us struggle to find support and validation. It can be a challenge to raise your voice when it feels as through the rest of the world is saying, 'Don't make a sound'. This Wednesday, the 17th of February at 7:30pm AEST, join us for a much-needed chat about the challenges resulting from stigma, and ways that we can combat and cope with it. See you all then!

Welcome to the forums @Havoc! What you went through with your friends sounds so painful. :( I'm sure you have lots to offer people through your friendship and there will be plenty of other people who come into your life and appreciate and accept you. I'm glad that others were supportive of you and you were able to focus on some other things. How was the family lunch and how have you been going?

@Wathan Wow, that must be so stressful. :( I have heard a bit about what's happening in Myanmar on the news. It's understandable that you would be worried about your family. The country my parents came here from was involved in the Arab Spring. We still have family over there. I know it's not exactly the same situation, but it's scary being on the other side of the world when violence and bad events happen in the country your family is in. I really hope that your loved ones are okay. I don't have much to suggest, but it could be helpful to make a self-care plan when you feel like things are too overwhelming. I try to distract myself when there is nothing that I can do about something that I'm worried about.

@PhoneMomma Being short has its downsides for sure. :( I'm 147cm (my mum is the same height) and I also get mistaken for being younger than I am. I had to ask someone for help today because I couldn't reach a shelf. Someone else called me short as well. It does not really bother me but some things are frustrating. There are some advantages to my height though, such as being able to get into small gaps, not hitting my head underneath tables or on small roofs and having extra leg space. I don't really know what I can say to make you feel any better, but I just wanted to say you're not alone. I share your frustrations about the negatives.

@xXLexi_Lou122Xx It must be so frustrating that your teachers don't read about your condition and what to do. :( When I was in school, I found that there were some teachers who were supportive of my mental and physical health, and some who weren't, just didn't believe me or refuse to make accommodations for me. I wish teachers were more understanding. Recently, I used a label maker to print QR codes of my emergency medical info. When someone scans them, they list my conditions and what to do if I have an episode. I decided to put them on a lanyard I wear to work after I had a couple of fainting episodes there.

@Charlie-29-1999 I'm really sorry you had those experiences with your dad when you were younger. :( It really wasn't okay for him to treat you like that. Parents definitely aren't perfect people. I'm glad that your relationship is better now and that he's apologised. I don't think it's uncommon to still think about these things from time to time. Even though he's apologised, that doesn't take away what he did and your feelings are totally valid and normal. Only you can decide whether or not it was abuse or trauma. Everyone's definitions and the things that they are affected by are different, but no less valid. How do you feel when you look back on these memories? What helps you cope with anything you might be feeling?

Hi @Wilheim! Welcome to the forums! I think it's great that you want to manage your drinking. The first step is often the hardest, so well done. :) What else have you done to help yourself quit? A habit tracking app could help. You could make a habit such as 'I didn't drink today' and mark it as done if you accomplished it. Some habit tracking apps let you see your streaks, create a score or give you a reward if you accomplish your goals. It really depends on your device, but I'd recommend having a look around as some apps have a limited number of features compared to others, such as only tracking a small number of habits. Here are some other alcohol-specific apps: I Am Sober Daybreak EasyQuit Sober Time Quitzilla Good luck! We're all rooting for you! :)

What's something you love others doing for you? 2. What's your favourite romantic TV show, film, song or book? 3. What's your favourite type of shell? Or, post a picture of a shell you like. 4. What's the nicest gesture someone has done for you to show they care about you? 5. Are you looking forward to anything this month?

@mspaceK It's good to hear from you again. Thanks for updating us about how you've been going. I will really miss chatting with you on here when you turn 26. It can be bittersweet to transition out of services. It can also be difficult having to adjust to new supports, especially if you've been with your old ones for so long. Eight years is such a long time. Something that could make the transition easier is if you ask to be referred to services that are similar to the ones that you're currently seeing or ones that are affiliated with them.
