I like to collect playing cards! My favourites are single cards that I randomly find, I've found some just lying around in the street (a magician, maybe?) or in geocaches. I also love getting themed playing cards of places I visit. I guess I also have a book collection, too! And stickers, I like to buy stickers thinking I'm going to 'eventually' use them for the letter-writing I never do.

Hi guys, I've been so busy I haven't been on here for a while, hoping to change that soon! I just wanted to update everyone, and see if maybe (hopefully) writing things out makes things any easier right now... Basically, I got accepted into honours in uni next year... but the offer was conditional, and I had to complete my last two units. Well... I don't think I can complete one. I'm 6 weeks behind in the readings and the first assignment was due three days ago and I've barely looked at it (and when I do, I burst into tears). The uni is closed until January so there's no one I can talk to about this. I don't know what's wrong with me, feeling like this so close to the end. At this point I know I need to withdraw, try again next year. A gap year would be good for me, even if I did fully get into honours. But... a year is so, so long... what else will happen? I feel like I'm wasting my youth. First two years of uni went fine, but if I withdraw this will be my forth year in the second term of third year. Where did six years of my life go?! The people I started uni with are married now, and have started their careers. I'm still stuck here, I can't even get into honours which I apparently want so desperately. I think I need a gap year, anyway... all I've done is study, all my life. I've really lost my identity outside of it. All the books except one are books I've read for uni. I barely watch TV or movies or do anything anymore. But at the same time... what on Earth can I do! I've had trimesters off before and I've just wasted them. I think it's the fact that the New Year is soon, but I'm really struggling at the moment. Every single thought of the future is paralyzing suddenly, I don't know why. All that goes through my mind is... I'm getting older every year, and doing the same old things. And when things change, I can't cope or accept it. How much will I hurt next year, what bad things might happen? Even thinking that good things might happen is overwhelming and tiring. No matter how I think of it, I'm just so exhausted that I don't want to think about the future at all. Sorry if none of this makes sense. Thanks for listening.

Yeah, it goes so quick doesn't it @Sunnybear! Brain isn't working right now (so exhausted) so maybe I'll revisit this question later, but completely agree with a lot of what has been said! Just reminding ourselves that happiness isn't and shouldn't be the default, that all emotions are important and deserve to be felt as well, and it's often true that happiness comes when you least expecting it. Chasing happiness can make you anxious, which pushes away happiness!

@Sunnybear I love that way of explaining it: ' I don't think we can "control" our feelings of happiness where we can just switch it on and off at ease but we definitely have control over our perception of particular situations which could bring us happiness'. I agree! 'happiness' is an emotion, a product of how our brain decides to react to things! Goodnight @sunnygirl606!

Last question! What are some ways we can cope with stress that arises from trying to manage our own and others experience of happiness?

How important is happiness to you? Have your views about happiness changed throughout your life? How do these attitudes affect your daily life? Completely agree with @Lost_Space_Explorer5! Just another emotion I'm open to feeling, there's no real point in actively chasing it! There can always be more to do, or things to be done or go wrong... but living in the present is important! I definitely think I've been more open to happiness lately, apparently the fear of happiness is called cherophobia (like the singer Cher? weird...) but as weird as it sounds I think I've struggled with it at some points. I've always had a feeling that if I was happy, it wasn't going to last long or things will ruin it. But now I'm happy to just to feel it and move on!

@WheresMySquishy Good point! There's so many expectations that someone always needs x to be happy, and if they don't have it then they can't be happy!

@Lost_Space_Explorer5 Exactly, to both of your points! Definitely think too much of one emotion is portrayed by society as a bad thing.

Does society have certain expectations when it comes to experiencing happiness? If so, how might these have impacted on you and those around you? Ah I can say so much about this! Like I said, society tends to place happiness as the 'default emotion', when that's not the case! All emotions are okay, and avoiding them (I find) tends to make things worse. People shouldn't have to pretend to be happy for the sake of others (definitely an important point to bring up around the holidays -- so many Christmases in the past I've felt I had to force myself to feel happy because everyone else was). On the other hand though, some more cynical people may say that happiness is being unrealistic and ignoring other problems (like me in the past, I felt like when I was happy I'd try and find something wrong purposefully because I felt like something will happen that will ruin it anyway). That's not true, either! Again, like all emotions, happiness comes and goes and that's okay!

What are some things which can cultivate happiness for you? How do these things compare to strategies which you might have come across before (e.g. being grateful, being mindful, etc.)? Have things which you thought would make you happy met your expectations? Being with friends, being in nature (which is also being mindful), engaging in my hobbies and looking back at past achievements! I feel the less I chase happiness, the more I appreciate and feel it. Again, I believe happiness shouldn't really be seen as the 'default' emotion, but it's nice to be felt! So many things I've thought would make me happy but haven't completely, mostly because of anxiety and fear ahah. Things like certain outings that didn't live up to expectations, or having a specific item that I really want. But it's rare to feel just one emotion at once, at least for me anyway.

@Lost_Space_Explorer5 I also love Inside Out so much, pretty good explanation of core emotions too! And such a brilliant portrayal of depression, when the controls go out and they're like 'Riley can't feel anything' gets me every time T_T

@Lost_Space_Explorer5 hahah nah, it's just that it was such a foreign concept to me at the time and I hadn't felt happiness in a while, so I didn't know how to interpret the feeling!

What is happiness? What does it look and feel like for you? How do you define happiness? It's... an emotion, one of the 'core' emotions researchers think we're born with (as well as disgust + distress). It just is! but sometimes I suppose it can be hard to recognise (especially for me, sometimes I've felt I was sick or nauseous when really I was feeling happy!). It's just a feeling in my chest, something like warmth.

I love your intro post @Lost_Space_Explorer5! So true about what you said, 'is it okay to not be happy'. 100%! I don't know why, but I've been thinking a lot lately how it's frustrating that happiness is seen as the 'default' emotion, and that anything else other than happy is bad. Totally not true, we have other feelings for a reason and they need to and deserve to be felt! Can't wait for the chats tonight!
