Ugh! I hate when that happens. I'm half-way through the 3rd season of 'Originals' and I cannot force myself to watch any more of it. Like it is actual torture. I thought if I just listened to it ... Same thing happened to me for 'Heroes'.

My SO was trying to get me to watch Blacklist for ages! I stubbornly refused, so he started watching it knowing that I would more than likely watch over his shoulder. Hmph! So, now, every so often, I'll come across episodes I have already watched.

When someone says "no I'm not okay" how do we respond appropriately? It is best to stay calm, keep talking to them in the tone of the conversation you have already set, (I do recommend having/keeping it casual) ask them what they mean by that, if they care to elaborate. If you're not sure of any services, you can recommend looking up one together whilst keeping the conversation going. If they don't divulge anything other than they are not okay, you can continue conversing with them, let them know that you are here if they change their mind about talking about it.

How do you ask someone if they're okay? I usually ask them straight out and then get the generic answer of fine, to which I usually reply, “No, really, how are you?” That’s when they know that I am actually interested in how they are going and not just asking a rhetoric question. This usually then involves me explaining why I’m actually asking and it usually has something to do with the way they are behaving of late. So perhaps a certain look in their eye, they don’t seem like their usual self, they seem really nervous about something or just seems off about them. Why is it important to ask this question? Because people don’t want to feel like a burden, so they bottle everything up instead of talking about it. So if they know that you genuinely care about how they are, they are more likely to open up to you, in which you can help them based on what they have told you. Sometimes you don’t need to take the conversation any further but other times they may need to seek professional help.

Hey @anonymousnobody Thanks for sharing your story. This is a really difficult situation that you have found yourself in, but there are ways to help them. You can encourage them to call helplines when they need to, even offer to be there with them the first time that they call. We have a fact sheet here at RO that you may find helpful on what to expect when calling a helpline. Some helpful ones would be kids helpline (1800 55 1800), lifeline (13 11 14). We also have a fact-sheet on how to help a friend who self-harms. It focuses on a range of things including encouraging them to develop their own self-help plan to when they feel like harming. But perhaps most importantly, it talks about how to look after yourself whilst helping your friends. Don't be afraid to talk to a counselor about how to better support your friends. Encourage them gently about seeking professional help, even suggest, if you are up to it, that you go with them to talk to their parent/s or school counselor. I hope that you find some of the information provided to be helpful and feel like you can come back and talk to us about how things are progressing. Take care, stonepixie

I used a purple pen on an assessment once. Yeah, that didn't go down too well. Name the first song you listened to today.
