Year 12 Results

Year 12 results are coming up soon, and if you’ve just finished your final exams you might be feeling confidence and hope, dread or anxiety, or something else entirely. If you’re getting your results back, know that you’re not alone- the community is here for you!

Here are a few suggestions for what you can do when you get your marks back:

  • Make a comfortable space for yourself where you can view your marks when you’re ready.
  • Have something planned as self-care afterwards, whether that be going for a walk, having a tasty treat or doing a favourite activity.
  • Remember that your marks are just a score. They don’t reflect the growth you’ve experienced, the trials you’ve conquered, or anything about your worth!

For some inspiring stories of what people got up to after year 12, have a look at this Weekly Wellbeing. If you need someone to chat to 1-1 about how you’re feeling, ReachOut PeerChat lets you connect with a peer worker online.

What advice do you have for those receiving their marks next week?

Hi @Stormy-RO,

I know my reply is a tad bit late, but wanted to jump in anyways!

Firstly, irrespective of the marks received, it's important to recognise how big of an achievement finishing high school is! Whoever is reading this, I'm beyond proud of you for reaching this big milestone! 🎉

As for me, I remember feeling very stressed the few days leading up to the release of results. I thought it was the be-all and end-all. Now, having graduated university, I see things so much differently:

  • Don't feel the need to rush into life. Give yourself the time to process this outcome and plan your next steps.
  • Know it's okay to take a break before jumping into further education and/or work.
  • There's no such thing as a linear path following high school. I planned and set goals, but life turned out completely differently. And for that - I couldn't be more grateful.
  • Try your best to resist the urge to compare your mark/s to others. Each person has their own path, past and future, which is unique to them.

All in all, wishing each person reading this post the very best for the future. 😊

You got this!

First of all, I want to say congratulations to everyone who finished year 12! I’m sure it has been a difficult year with a lot of nerves and anticipation but now it’s done! This is an amazing feat and regardless of the results, be proud of how far you’ve gotten 😊

I graduated year 12 in 2021 and I still remember how nerve-wracking it was for me when I was waiting for my results. But I want to share some tips on how to handle the stress.

1. Practice self-affirmations. Tell yourself that you’ve done a good job and that you appreciate all the hard work you’ve done this year. I understand that this may be hard to do when you’re anxious for your results but taking time to acknowledge that finishing year 12 is a major achievement and that you are proud of yourself can ease your worries, even if just a little bit. As someone who is grade-conscious and can struggle with academic validation, this technique really helped me relieve some of my stress as I waited for my results to be released.

2. It is okay to be sad if you do not get the results you are expecting. Whilst being positive is a good thing, sometimes what we need is to let ourselves feel what we really feel inside. Being sad and disappointed for not getting the results you want is a valid reaction and emotion, so don’t invalidate yourself for feeling that way. What matters is that you understand that there will be other opportunities out there and that your results will not always be like this. So be sad today if you need to but remember to keep your head up because good things await you in the future!

3. Remember to practice self-care. Do things that make you happy, calm, and comfortable. This is a stressful time, and it is important that you are practicing self-care. Treat yourself to something nice! No matter what the results are, you deserve a nice little treat.

Lastly, I wish you all the best! I hope you get the results you are aiming for. You did a great job 😊

Hello, so I didn’t get my High School education here in Australia but I finished up my final years of High school in the year 2018.

I would admit it was very nerve-wrecking and anxiety-inducing at the time for me and that’s perfectly normally if you feel the same way as well.

Some advice I would give on this would be that:

1. No matter what you get, be proud of the fact that you made it through your final years of High School. I would admit I didn’t do the best in my final years of High school ( I didn’t reach most of my predicted scores). But looking back at it now, it’s alright because even with that score I got to go into Pre-U which then prepared me for Uni. It was a first big step toward something more for me and I’m pretty grateful for the opportunities given so keep at it regardless of the your grades

2. It’s okay to give yourself some time to process it all. Receiving your grades is a really nerve wrecking and anxiety-inducing process and it’s fine to give yourself ample amount of personal time after regardless of what you got or if it’s considered “bad” or “good”

3. Finally, you don’t need to share the grades that you get if you don’t want to. Your grades are a personal matter of yours and whether you wish to disclose it is up to you in the end, so don’t feel pressured to do so if you don’t want to.

In any case, I wish you all the best of luck in getting your grades next week ☺️

I graduated year 12 in 2019 but still remember how scary those times were! Congratulations to those who are completing this amazing chapter! I have left some thoughts below that I hope provide some comfort during this time. Great discussion by the way!

1. No matter the outcome, completing year 12 is an incredible achievement. Take pride in the hard work you have put in and recognise the incredible amount of growth and learning you have experienced.

2. There are always pathways forward and various ways to reach your goals. This is an exciting time. Explore the many things this next chapter has to offer.

3. Reflection! I have found this to be a really important thing for me. Look back at how far you have come and what you have achieved but also start preparing for this next transition.

4. Take care of yourself. Stay connected to friends and family. Seek support if needed. Do things that help you recharge!

Lastly, I think it’s really important to stay positive and remember that this is just the beginning of a really exciting chapter. You’re gonna do great!

Hey @Stormy-RO

It's so heart-warming to see the post on this. I have been in that positon, waiting for year 12 results, maybe I acted on outside like I didn't care. I was the type of person who likes to keep the result to myself.

The advices I want to give to my dear friends are

1. Don't compare yourself with others. You know you did the best you could do.

2. Just see the grades as a number, it does not define you. I do know, sometimes that number matter to you when you want to get into your dream uni. But, I want you to always remember, whatever happens, happens for the best.

3. Accept your result, then let it go. Focus on what you can do now and where do you see yourself in 2-3 years? What really sparks in you, something you are really passionate about?

4. Your result is not your deadend. Always remember, life is not just about results. Infact, it's more about experiences.

Lastly, I wish you all the best. You are amazing

Close your eyes.

Take a deep breath

Breath in

Breath out

Then finally see your result.

🤗

What a great post! Completing year 12 is such an achievement. Everybody who has finished high school this year should be so proud of themselves!! I remember being so nervous about my year 12 results so here is some advice I found helpful during this time:

Like a couple other comments have shared, comparing yourself to others can often make things feel worse then what they are. You know your abilities and that you tried your absolute best. That is all we can ever ask for.

This grade does not define you or your intelligence. There are so many different things people can be good or smart in. Lots of different skills aren't tested or even available to try throughout school. Everyone has their individual and unique strengths.

For anyone who's nervous about their results, remember to take some time to breathe before looking. It can also be helpful to have loved ones with you for support!

Best of luck!

Welcome back!
