Learning Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Languages!

Hey everyone! Because we have to pause the chat we were going to have, i thought i'd make a thread for us all to get involved in learning more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. This thread is about language!

There are LOTS of languages and dialects that the many nations that live or lived in this country. It's pretty sad because we don't know many of them anymore Smiley Sad The mission for this thread is to learn one word, from one language and to tell us about it.

You can start to learn

  • By listening to WordUp
  • Checking out this article (which is also from WordUp)
  • A bunch of great resources here
  • Anywhere else- if you find it, share it!

Here's what you need to do:

  • Tell us the nation the word you learned comes from
  • Tell us the word and try and explain how to say it properly
  • Tell us what the word means and how you would use it!

This is a word i learned that comes from the Gaddigal people of the Eora nation

The word is Wellama, it kinda sounds like saying, "well llama" but you say it quickly: welllama

The word means "come back, or return" and i don't actually know how you use it yet, so i am going to make that my mission to find out.
