Return to community - I'm back
Hi everyone,
I just wanted to say how excited I am to be back here and how much I can't wait to catch up with you all.
I hope everyone has been well.
I'm in week 11 of uni, and it is pretty busy at the moment. I still don't have a job, but I have had several interviews over the past few months, and I have one next week, so I am hopeful for something soon.
At the moment, for my research uni, I am doing a research proposal on stress and anxiety among university students and whether mindfulness-based meditation can help with that. It is a group project, so I'm not doing it all alone. We won't have any participants for this research as it's just a proposal.
I have been catching up with the group of girls I met at the brunch. We went to the zoo a few weeks ago and plan to catch up in June.
I have three exams coming up on the 31st of May, 7th and 14th of June.
Yes, I did. It was a good game.
I have submitted both assignments, so that's all done for the semester. Now, I will go on to study for my exam on Friday.
Yes, they are, so that's nice.
How are you?
That’s good!
Must be a relief to get everything done. Best of luck for your exam.
I’m glad. Close book exams are really just memorisation. It’s fine but not really that practical.
I’m doing alright. Just waiting the feedback for one on my assignments so that I can submit the final one. Also looking forward to catching up on the preliminary maths I need for next semester’s subjects during the holidays.
How are you doing? Have you heard back from any of your interviews?
Yes, very much so. Thank you.
Yes, they are.
That's good. Ah, okay, I hope you get the feedback soon.
Do you have to do calculus in that maths course?
I'm doing a preliminary maths unit next sem as well.
I'm alright. I could be better, but oh well. No, not yet.
I'm safe, KHL if I need it.
Hey @Red_Flamingo
How are you today? Hope things are alright.
Thanks! The feedback was okay, not particularly helpful though.
Yeah, I do have calculus. I’ve never done it before, so I’ll need to do a bit in the holidays. Do you enjoy maths? I feel like it can be a divisive subject.
What have you been up to?
I'm alright. I did some study this morning and went to my sleep doctor.
Oh, I'm sorry, that sucks.
Hey, maybe we can help each other as this will be new for both of us.
How funny! We are both doing preliminary maths next sem.
I don't mind it, I guess. I'll just have to see how hard it is and if I can understanding.
This is what I will be doing in my math unit.
Content - Numbers, Algebra, Mensuration, Trigonometry, Introduction to 2D Vectors, Functions and Graphs, Introduction to Calculus.
I’m glad to hear you’re alright! Was the doctor okay?
What a pleasant coincidence. I’m glad I know someone in a similar situation! I’m sure will be able to help each other.
Honestly, as much as I like psychology, I think numbers are less confusing than people 😂
Yeah, that’s completely fair. It’s hard to make an assessment if you haven’t done it/something similar yet.
My unit covers: number theory, propositional and predicate logic, graph theory, sets, functions, recurrences and combinatorics, and differential/integral calculus.
Yeah… I have a lot of prep to do.
Oh, by the way, how did your first exam go? I really hope you are proud of the effort you've put in, regardless of the outcome.
Yeah, well, that's gone, but oh well.
Yes, it is not much help. My sleep was good, so I don't know why I am so tired.
Have you done calculus before? I didn't know you would have to do that for a psych degree.
Yes, maths would be much less confusing than people.
I guess I did okay. I wish I had more time, though; even with the extra 20 min, that still wasn't enough. Once I see my grade I will be hahahha.
Hey @Red_Flamingo
Ah, damn. That’s annoying. I always found being tired made being depressed so much worse. Hopefully they can work out what’s happening.
Nope I have not. Not compulsory, this is completely my doing 😂. I’ve run out of electives, but I need to do these specific maths subjects for the biostatistics masters I’m looking at. So, I’ll just go through one of the year 12 bridging course calculus during the holidays and cross my fingers.
That’s completely fair. The time kind of sneaks up on you. But it’s also concerning when you’re done with a bunch of time left. I think exams just kind of suck.
Yes, it can make it worse.
Ah okay, that makes sense. It's like I want to add the Bachelor of Science to my current degree to make it a double, but I have to do the math unit first.
Oh so you have to do a winter unit first before the one next sem?
That is true, but I am very slow when it comes to exams. Yes I think they do and don't.
Hey,
How are you?
I am not doing that great sorry to say. My mental health has taken a dip the past couple days.
What will you use to teach yourself? Do you have any online maths stuff?
I need to work on it as well so if you have any tips or tricks that would be amazing.
Lucky you hahahah.
Sorry I only just got an email about your reply from the other day I'm not sure why it took so long I'm sorry.
No worries at all.
I’m doing okay. Managed to get through 2/5 exams so almost halfway. I’m sorry to hear that your mental health has gone down. Did anything happen? Honestly, the stress of uni by itself can be enough to make things hard. Hopefully things will pick up soon.
There’s a website called edX. You can access a bunch of uni courses through it (you need to pay to get the credit and for tests/assignments, but the content is free). Adelaide uni does their maths bridging course through it so I’m planning to go through that.
Here’s the link if you’re interested: https://www.adelaide.edu.au/mathslearning/bridging-program#how-it-works
That's good. What are all five of your exams on?
Are you doing the paid version to get credit?
Do you know if that course can be transferred to another unis?
There are so many things I have been posting about what's happened elsewhere. I don't want to cross-post. Also posted about what's just happened with my psych. I feel so crushed. I have no clue how it went from okay one minute to me feeling way too much.
Hey @Red_Flamingo
They were on health psych and individual development psych. The next three are on research methods, social psych, and cross cultural and Indigenous psych.
Nah I’m just going to do the free one.
It can be used as evidence of completing Methods (for the degrees that require it) but I don’t think it counts as a unit unfortunately.
I’ll go have a look!
That sounds very interesting.
What one is your favourite?
Well, that's good if it can be used for methods. I haven't done that. Is there calculus in that online one?
Yeah, it’s been pretty interesting. My favourite is research methods. I just really like statistics.
What has been your favourite unit so far?
Yeah, the course covers both differential and integral calculus. If you’re doing an introductory maths unit, it’ll probably be around the same level as the course.
How are you feeling today? I hope things are a bit better.
I like research methods as well. I did that this semester as well with that difficult group.
Ah, okay, I'll have a look.
I'm not feeling great, to be honest. I can't stop thinking about yesterday and what happened with my psych.
It’s always good to have a double degree. It gives you a lot more options.
There’s no compulsory unit, just a recommended one. I plan to teach myself rather than doing the unit. I got lucky because one of my brothers did a masters in maths and is a pretty good teacher so I can ask him to explain stuff I don’t get.
Completely fair. I do actually like exams, but I understand why most people don't. I like being able to see all the things I’ve learnt. It’s satisfying being able to answer a question you wouldn’t know the answer to previously.
How have you been doing?
