Depression

Hey Reach Out community,

I’ve really been struggling with my depression lately and just need some help. About a month ago I started anti-depressants but the past few days have been really difficult. Today I had a breakdown after assembly and called my parents crying in the bathroom. They couldn’t pick me up, but my friends cheered me up a bit. I just feel like no-one understands and I just can’t be bothered to do anything anymore and my parents are getting tired of supporting me but I just can’t help myself either.

Idk if this makes sense sorry

Hi @Green_Forest

Thank you for reaching out. It sounds really difficult having to deal with depression, but I'm glad you have friends that tried to cheer you up :)). Having had a depressive episode myself at one point in time, I can understand how you feel that no-one truly understands. I can also understand how exhausting and helpless it can feel.

I just want to ask, have you tried seeing a psychologist or had any type of psychotherapy? I know that cognitive behavioral therapy is an effective treatment for depression that is well-supported by evidence, and it can help you address thoughts and behavior that maintain/contribute to the depression. Anti-depressants can help with the depression but they don't address thoughts. I'm just wondering if psychotherapy may be worth trying for you; it might make a difference for your depression :))

Hope this makes sense :)),

Hi @Green_Forest ,

We are sorry to hear how hard things have been for you the last few days. It sounds like you have been sitting with some pretty heavy feels for a while now. It is understandable that you feel people don't really understand you. I can see that your friends are doing what they can to help.

When you feel down, can you think of things that might help? For example, does deep breathing help? Listening to music, going for a walk?

I'm wondering if you know about Kids Helpline? They're a free, 24/7 counselling service available via phone or webchat where you can talk to someone when you're feeling upset or overwhelmed. I was also wondering if you've been able to get any other professional support, like talking to your school counsellor?

At the same time, if you continue to feel like things are increasingly difficult, it may be worthwhile speaking to your doctor who prescribed the medication. Do you think you could contact your doctor to let them know that you've been having a few difficult days, especially if it keeps happening? They may be able to give some guidance on how to manage your medication.

Please know you are not alone. I'll be sending you a check-in email.
