I don’t know if something is wrong with me

I have a fidgeting problem, and find it hard to focus without doing it. At school I’ll just play with a pen or doodle little thing in my book, but I still pay attention and all that. When I’m at home I normally just have some kinda toy with me(Rubik’s cube, Rubik’s snake, etc) or if I don’t I just move my fingers and stuff.

most of the time I do it unintentionally.

My stepdad keeps telling me off about it and says he wants to send me to my dads house or get me mental help about it, and that if I don’t stop he will do that stuff. I don’t know if there’s something wrong with me but I don’t have adhd(that I know of) although my brother does. The only thing I have is kinda bad anxiety.

Is there something wrong with me?

Hey @Im_so_sorry_okay🙂

I wanted to check in and see how you're feeling today?

I fidget a lot too! I recently got a new pop-it ball and I love it! It really helps me concentrate and keep myself focused. I think using fidget toys or doodling is something a lot of people do, so you're definitely not alone or wrong.

It sounds like your stepdad might not understand that this is a tool you use to help yourself, am I right in thinking that you feel like using fidget toys is something that helps you rather than distracts you?

Hi @Im_so_sorry_okay

Thank you for sharing what is happening for you. Do you experience any distress or negative impacts from fidgeting? Do you know why your stepdad tells you off about fidgeting? It sounds like he is wanting to get you more support.

Unfortunately, we can't provide medical advice on the forums. If you feel worried or unsure about what is going on, you could talk to your doctor or a mental health professional to determine whether it is an issue or not. For example, fidgeting might be your way of managing anxiety and there may be other things that you can do instead that might be more helpful. They can help you decide whether fidgeting is a good thing or a bad thing for you because everyone is different 🙂

I was also wondering if you have anyone in your life that you can speak to about this. Whether it is another parent, a teacher, a counsellor or a doctor?
