I just wanna vent

Mostly regarding my career choices and all that stuff 🤷‍♀️
you know I really wanna look for a role where I don’t need to necessarily deal with clients or customers at a workplace AT ALL and since I can’t imagine myself working at a customer service place especially for a WEEK that’s the reason why I wanna look for a role that doesn’t arent customer service based or whatever. So I looked for this CERT IV of Information Technology course in two different universities that I was thinking of applying but unfortunately they don’t do mid-year intakes, just only February intakes which is frustrating because now I’m about to finish up with my current course of CERT IV in accounting & bookkeeping, I really wanna do another cert IV course after I complete my current one instead of wanting to apply and look for a bookkeeping role right away because like how am I suppose to handle or deal with working at a place where I would need to deal with clients or customers, even if it was 10-20% of the time during my work shift?? I don’t know how long I can bare that to be really honest, and as someone that suffered from serious social anxiety for a really long time and usually takes things personally when it comes to I guess getting yelled at or even treated a certain way by higher ups and people in general too. Like I had an appointment with a job consultant yesterday that was linked to the uni I’m doing my current course at and they did say I needed to change my mindset a bit when it comes to me saying that I wanna look for a role that doesn’t involve having to deal with clients or customers.

Anyways, I was looking to do this CERT IV of Professional writing and editing course which DOES do July intakes, but I don’t know cause ‘writing’ is not really my strong interest but it is something that allows you to work more autonomously based on the career pathways with this course so yea idk help.

Hey @Blueberries ,

Sounds like there's a lot you have been thinking about in terms of your studies and your career. It sounds stressful and anxiety-provoking to have to deal with customers and clients when it's just not what you want. We certainly hear you and want to be able to support you through this.

At your current place of study, is there a student phone service you can phone and ask for advice to see what options are out there. You might find something that you've never even thought of before that might be worth trying!

Jobs are always growing, changing and developing. They come about when society sees a need for it. As you navigate life, can you think of something society is currently 'missing' that may be helpful for people and something they will want? For example, while working, one person noticed how 'right-handed' everything in life is - from microwave and fridge doors to markings on a ruler. They then thought 'why should left-handers miss out?' That's when there was a development of spiral-bound notebooks for left-handers, rulers and scissors for left-handers etc. Even a very famous fast food restaurant celebrated a month for left-handers!

Why I'm sharing this is that in a few years time, there will be new jobs out that no one ever even dream would exist.

What is something you are very interested in and you also see 'missing' in society right now? Just consider. No need for solid answers right now.

At the same time, I wonder if you can phone student support services to see if there's anything they recommend.

All the best. We hope you keep the community updated.

Hi @Chloe-RO

I don’t know what student phone services you’re talking about, but I assume that those types of services would pretty much give me the same advice that every other consultant I’ve had sessions or appointments with has given me…

But like I said on my original post, I have sought advice from one of the job consultants that I had an appointment with at my current university the day before and he was able to provide me some links that I can have a look on with that I might consider applying some particular roles for - including the links that people with autism like myself can apply for too such as the Rise Program.
Also, despite him saying that I need to change the mindset that I have when I told him that I wanted roles that don’t involve customer service, since being a bookkeeper would involve having clients - it just made me quite hesitant and scared to really wanna become a bookkeeper. Because how can people like him expect me to change that mindset of mine that I have?? Like me having autism and really long-term social anxiety isn’t gonna change the fact that I’m scared of having to talk to people verbally whether it’s face to face or through phone calls especially on a regular basis.

Yeah, I guess there’s some roles that I can consider that is currently ‘missing’ that may be helpful for people and something they will want. I don’t know what they are, but ummm yeah….

That makes sense @Blueberries . We hear how difficult making such choices can be when there is an element of fear and social anxiety. It sounds like you have asked around and the Rise Program sounds like a really good start.

Thank you for clarifying that phone calls can also be anxiety-provoking. It must be so tough and possibly frustrating to be told ‘you need to change your mindset’.

Are you interested in graphic design and things like that where you work predominantly on a computer to design things e.g. signs, posters, visual etc?

@Chloe-RO I don’t know if you were able to reread it but I also mentioned on my previous reply “face to face” as well, not just the phone calls part that I find anxiety-provoking.

About the designing stuff, that’s what I was thinking of wanting to do as well but doing that during a course related to it involves a lot of working in groups I would think? I could be wrong about that but it seems like you would need to work in groups too for design courses including the computer ones. As much as I would like to enrol into a design course that’s like outside of any particular University, those outside-of-uni courses are usually really expensive to afford for. So I don’t know. I feel stuck and I hate having to experience this feeling and thoughts but at the same time I can’t help just having negative and fixed thoughts all the time because they’re easier than thinking the other way round.

Hey there @Blueberries ,

I'm certainly hearing what you are saying. I'm sorry that these feelings are so 'stuck' right now.

Would you ever consider partnering with someone you get a long with so that they can be your 'sidekick'. That is, you do the designing etc, and they do the communication with clients? I've known people who pretty much learn things themselves in an area they are interested in. e.g. learning to use a particular creative suite/software to design wedding invitations, placecards, posters etc.

And if you do want to study something, is there possibility to have a special learning/adjustment plan with supporting documentation from your doctor so that you don't need to work in groups?

I'm only brainstorming. Food for thought.

So right now I'm considering on applying for a traineeship. Now the thing about applying for traineeships is that the interviews for traineeship are basically like job interviews which I hate lol. Like geez these goddamn job interviews are extremely overrated 🙄

@Chloe-RO right now I'm deciding after I either complete or drop out my current course on whether I should apply for an Administration Traineeship where I'm able to obtain a CERT III in business there (and it's full time), or if I should apply for a CERT IV in Professional Writing and Editing at a University (full time study).🤔 since studying full time will allow me to get paid from Centrelink through student payments too so yea...

But I guess I'll have to wait and see if I'll be eligible to join the Rise Program first 🤔

I already have an adjustment/learning plan that the uni I'm currently at has done though so that's all good by now.

Also, if it involves working in groups then I'm really hesitant about joining the course.
