Comfort characters/stories

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share about something that's always helped me through tough times, and helped me to love myself more. Comfort characters are commonly brought up in online fandoms, but I really believe that in addition to just being something fun to talk about, they can also be a great source of strength, resilience and self-love.

Does anyone want to share about a character, or even a novel/show (any piece of media, really!) that's perhaps helped you figure things out about yourself, or helped uplift you? Maybe you see yourself in them, and following their journey makes you feel stronger. Maybe they take great care of themselves and the people around them, and it inspires you. Maybe their character growth makes you feel hopeful for the future.

I find that it's something really nice to reflect on! For instance, when I'm feeling hopeless, I turn to my favourite character Kim Dokja (from Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint)! I see myself in him because we have very similar values and ways of thinking, and we both use fiction as a way to survive reality. Seeing how determined and strong he is makes me feel that I could be that way too! And despite his feelings of isolation, by the end of the novel he has found a little group of people who love him to bits, and it reminds me that my friends and family are always there for me.

I'd love to hear about you guys' comfort characters or stories, and how they help you take care of yourself 📖 Maybe we'll find we have something in common, or we'll discover new fictional worlds to explore!!

For me, definitely Loki Laufeyson would be a comfort character. It's just something about his character that I can relate to so much. And I'd say my other ones would 100% be Hannibal Lecter (from the series, and ik very far fetched lmao) and characters from the Saw franchise.

I loved Rapunzel from Tangled because she was going into the unknown and away from a very overprotective mother. She had dreams and aspirations and a bubbly personality. I feel like it resonates with me as I aspire to try new things in my early adulthood. 😌

I also love L from DeathNote because he's super clever and quirky and has good taste in snacks. I can relate to that wholeheartedly. 😋

Ahhh Rapunzel is such a great pick!! Tangled is seriously one of the best Disney movies (in my humble opinion hahah)!! And yes her adventurous spirit is so inspiring😊

L is also an interesting choice! I've only seen one episode of Death Note but he's everyone online hahah from what I can see he's a really fun character😆 Do you watch any other animes btw??

@Green_Ghost we have very similar tastes !! i love demon slayer too, and i'm obsessed with all the studio ghibli movies. spirited away is my favourite for sure, but howl's moving castle is a really great one for comfort because it's so beautiful and magical ! i haven't seen i want to eat your pancreas (i'm scared about how sad it'll be hahah) but the other two movies are amazing !! i've never heard of thermae romae novae, it looks pretty interesting :0 for me personally, my absolute favourites are the more psychological ones like tomodachi game and moriarty the patriot hehe

not really a comfort character but a book series that really changed my life was the "Ingo" book series! its about the ocean and mermaids but in a way that wasnt all happy and perfect but sometimes dangerous or sad and it felt so real. it really brought out my adoration of the ocean, all the creatures in and around it, the ocean itsef and now all the science around it! ive dyed my hair to look like the ocean, ive been seriously consideing getting some sea related tattoos and im looking into learning marine and coastal science so that i can work with the ocean, helping to conserve it and learn more about it!

Oh wow that sounds amazing! I think it's so special when a piece of media can positively influence your life to such an extent, just goes to show how important stories and art are 🙂 That book series sounds really interesting, and it's so cool that the ocean has become such a big part of your life, I really hope you get to pursue that!! I'm not a massive ocean person myself but I'll never forget the movie 'Song of the Sea' I saw when I was younger. The beauty, danger and mystery of the ocean that they convey really does make you fall in love!
