TW: body image issues :(

hey everybody i hope you guys are doing alright 🙂

TW: Body image issues

Spoiler
ive had pretty bad body image issues for a while ive always thought that i was overweight ive been told by peers that im either an average weight or overweight but when i look in the mirror all i can see is how fat i am.im always comparing myself to the other boys around me at school how skinny or muscly they are or how angular their faces are.ive always had weird eating patterns im not sure wether its a disorder as its not like anorexia but when i see the slightest change even ill feel so happy but then after about two weeks there will be a day or two where i'll freak out and try to start loosing weight again i dont know whats wrong with me i know its not healthy but its so hard to stop.i also find it difficult being a guy and struggling with this sort of stuff because i feel like people just assume its a thing for girls.

im sorry if this sounds like im complaining i just need someone to discuss this with.

thankyou every one 🙂

Hey @SonOfApollo welcome to the forums. I'm glad you've found us, and thankful that you are able to share your story here with us. I am really sorry to hear that you are struggling with your body image, it can be so hard and so isolating to go through. I don't see any of this as complaining, and it really sounds like you're feeling quite isolated and confused with these experiences. I also want to acknowledge that it is really difficult to be male and having this struggle, because as you say it is often not seen as an issue that affects men at all. But you are definitely not alone in this experience, and deserve to have support and compassion for what you're going through.

Do you have anyone in your life, a trusted adult or close friend, who you feel you could open up to about what you're experiencing? Even perhaps looking into seeing a school counsellor could be helpful. You don't deserve to go through this alone.

Having body image issues isn't uncommon, but it does sound like your behaviours are changing and that some of what you are doing has become quite worrying to you. It might help to have a read through some of the info that we have, to help you better understand what you're experiencing.

Understanding Body Image

6 ways to be #bodypositive

Eating disorders have a lot of variation, not just anorexia. It's not for me to tell you whether or not you have an ED, but you can have a look through the info we have here, and reflect on whether it's something you may want to look further into, and get some support for. Talking about it can definitely help, and I think it's really brave of you to share your experiences with us here.

If you wanted to talk to a professional about it a bit further, but you're unsure about opening up about it with the people in your life just yet, a good first step might be to get in touch with The Butterfly Foundation on 1800 33 4673. They also have heaps of info on their website, including this page about how EDs and body image issues can impact males - because it really can affect anyone, regardless of their gender.

It sounds like you know that this isn't the way you want to live your life, so I applaud you for being able to recognise that and for taking the initiative to talk about it with us here. We'll be here to support you along your journey as best we can 😊

Welcome back!
