how to get out of bed??
with the weather getting colder, it’s so much easier to just stay in bed. i struggle with executive dysfunction, so getting out of bed was already really hard, but now it’s even harder!! can someone please share what helps them get out of bed in the morning? all i want to do is stay under the covers all day every day!!

Hey there @adzukitty
With this weather, I would also rather stay in bed for the warmth.
What I usually do is to have separate clothing for sleeping and lounging. So I can associate what clothing is to what activity. When I go to sleep, I change into my sleepwear and to put my loungewear close by. Either on a bedside table or on a chair.
When I wake up, I grab my loungewear and to wear it under the blanket/quilt. That way, I am still kind of warm, but not warm to the point I just want to stay in bed. Then I get out of my bed and start my day.
Hopefully this can help you.
Hey @adzukitty I absolutely agree with you, I'd much rather stay in bed in the warmth.
I've got a job where I need to wake up at 7am, several days a week (even the weekends 😭) and my electric blanket is too tempting for me to stay in bed. My biggest 'hack' to lure me out is to immediately turn on my light and to have a breakfast that I'm excited about making and eating. I love a warm, savoury breakfast, so it's definitely something that can get me out of bed.
Hey @adzukitty
I can really relate to how comfortable you find your bed, especially in this weather.
I'll echo @Lapis_Anteater 's sentiment of making getting out of bed appealing, by suggesting that you could try to make some other space outside of your bed more appealing. You might find it helpful to have even warmer blankets (perhaps an electric one) elsewhere in your home, that you would need to get out of your bed to access. It's about incentivising yourself to get out of bed, by knowing that your better options for warmth and comfort are outside of your bed.
Hey @adzukitty
I’m in complete agreement. Beds are just too comfortable, especially in winter. The thing I’ve found the most helpful is the have an oodie next to my bed. That way I can put it whilst still in my bed, wait for a bit, and then get up and be nice and toasty.
As for the executive dysfunction making it hard to get out of bed, it might be helpful to make getting out of bed appealing. For example, if you like scrolling through your phone after you wake up, before you go to sleep you could place your phone out of bed range. That way if you want to use your phone, you need to leave your bed to get it. For me, I’m usually thirsty when I wake up, so I keep my water bottle on my desk where I can see it from my bed. It is surprisingly good motivation.
Hey @adzukitty I'm so glad someone else feels this way! I struggle really hard with motivating myself to get out of bed when I don't have to - and since I'm on a gap year AND between jobs rn it's a daily fight against my toasty bed & me lol
For myself, I really need a clear-cut plan for the day to get me up, but I also find I can lose myself in watching TikToks/Youtube videos/reading fanfiction for hours while I put off deciding what to do first thing in the morning. Because of this, I try and plan what I want/need to do for the day the night before with to-do lists and hourly schedules.
Without the pressure of the day having already started, I can really efficiently decide what to do and when - and by the time I wake up the next morning I'm way more likely to accept I need to get up and make a start on my first task (even if it's just making breakfast!).
I hope any of our replies have helped you in the battle against the cold mornings!🥶💙
Hi @adzukitty
I completely understand where you are coming from, I have even noticed that getting out of bed at the moment is hard.
Something that helps me get out of bed in the morning is knowing I am going to have a nice warm shower straight away and a lot of the time that pushes me out of bed and go straight into comfy warm clothes. The other thing I will often do immediately is put the heater on to warm the house up. It doesn't have to be long enough to take the chill out and make the house all warm and snuggly.
Probably the other thing I do is sort of plan something in the morning each day even if it's small so I'm like I have to do this today because I have this other thing tomorrow. Not allowing putting it off to stay in bed all day.
Otherwise, if the plan is a rest day, another warm cosy spot in your house. I have a corner set up on the couch with a blanket and a cushion I will sit and read there or watch a movie which helps me get out of bed.
I hope some of this helps.
Maybe planning something to look forward to? @adzukitty
For example, I like baking sometimes so I might plan to make a cake the next day. It's not an activity I can do in bed, so being excited about it may motivate me to get up.
Hey! @adzukitty, I definitely understand!! The most helpful thing that I have found for winter is my $15 kmart heater hehe. Makes getting up so much more tolerable! 🙂
Hey @adsukitty!!
That's definitely understandable!! The warm blankets seem extra comfy when its so cold!
I try to find the best of both worlds! I tend to snuggle into the blankets for 10 minutes after I wake up, which helps build my motivation to brace the cold. After that, having something to look forward to always helps! Sometimes that's the thought of another cozy spot (preferably under a blanket) with a book and a coffee. Or if it's a work day a warm shower usually helps, as well as planning something I'll enjoy throughout the day. Such as playing netball with friends or talking to a family member.
^^ Personally, this is usually a pretty accurate depiction of me for those first 10 minutes 😂. But hopefully the tips help to get out of bed!!
Hi @adzukitty
It really has been freezing as of recent oml. I'm not sure if this will be of any help but what gets me out of bed is placing my alarm/phone on the other side of the room/as far away as possible so when it goes off I would have to physically get out of bed to turn it off. It's good to make it a really obnoxious sounding as well so you can't ignore it. I find that for me personally that once I'm out of bed it's easier to get ready for the day.
I hope this helps a little bit!
I completely relate! I find it harder when I don't have any plans for the day. Definitely having a motivation helps. I usually have 2 showers a day because a quick one in the morning always makes me wake up and feel a little better. Also I'm someone who, if I don't eat breakfast soon enough I'll feel sick so maybe a nice yummy breakfast can be a motivator too! I think setting a goal would be good too because I find achievement a great motivator. Could be as little as getting up by 9am and then try 8:30 and then 8:15 etc so that it becomes routine and then work out what time you want to be asleep by and be awake by. Going to sleep at a reasonable time can also make it easier. Also, when I have to set an alarm I usually don't like waking up with a loud noise so I have an alarm that isn't too loud and is nicer to wake up to.
Hey @adzukitty thank you so much for sharing this!
I can completely relate to this because I also find it really hard to get out of bed, especially since I don't hear my alarm in the morning. I always get into a tricky situation which is why my mother has to pull my out of bed (quite literally).
Something that helps motivate me to get up is wearing a really warm Sherpa hoodie that feels just like I'm wearing my blanket. It keeps me warm and makes me feel like I'm almost in bed. Especially in the winter, when it's freezing.
I also like to set many alarms, usually at 5 minute intervals, hoping that I hear one of them. I place my phone out of reach which requires me to get up out of bed.
I really hope these tips are useful, and please remember that you are not alone! 😃🙌
Hey @adzukitty
Sorry to hear it has been tough to get out of bed for you ( the sheets are in fact getting more comfy due to the weather 😂)
But personally what I tend to get me out of bed most effectively would definitely be plans and commitments. So if I have an outing with someone or a task I planned to get done or started on (like my Uni work or hobbies) I’m very much pumped to pull myself out of bed and get started.
So for me, is definitely to put something up for me to do that I enjoy or must do.
For instance, I will get out of bed if I set out to visit a place to get started on an assignment, or I see a new food spot I want to try, then I’ll put that up for me to get nailed in
In any case, that’s my take on what I do to get up in the morning, hopefully we see what else people have to say on their end as well.
Hope this helps 😁
