transitioning to adult mental health services

hey loves,

do you have any advice for someone who is new to adult mental health services?

if you feel comfortable, it would be appreciated if someone could share their experience entering the adult space.

i recently turned 18 and i will be discharged from CYMHS soon. i have to say goodbye to my psychologist, and it makes me really sad. i'm anxious about navigating the adult mental health system and i don't know what to expect.

thanks!

lots of love,❤️

Hey @recoverwithme

Welcome to the Online Community. I am really glad that you have found us and have been able to reach out for some support.

I know you mentioned that you recently turned 18 - and wanted to wish you a very happy birthday!

It sounds like you are looking for some advice about accessing some mental health services and support now as an adult. I know you mentioned that you will be discharged from CYMHS soon and will be having to say goodbye to your psychologist soon which makes you really sad. I am sorry to hear this, and it is very understandable that you are feeling this way - it sounds like your psychologist has had a big impact on you and must have been a really great support for you. As scary as it feels, there are so many supports available that will be able to better support you during the next chapter of your life.

I was wondering if you have been able to talk to your current psychologist about how you are feeling about no longer seeing them anymore?

I was also wondering if you could speak to your psychologist, GP or CYMHS to ask for some support with finding another psychologist or some more support while transitioning?

I also wanted to share some resources with you about this which I thought you may find helpful. This collection of articles here includes several articles explaining types of support, how to access support if you don't have much money, explains what types of supports and professionals are available and even shares some stories from other young people who have accessed some support for their mental health. I really hope that these are helpful for you, but if you would like some more information please let us know.

ReachOut also has a one-on-one peer chat service where you can speak to one of our peer workers about how you are feeling. We have some more information about it here

Take care 😊
