Happy Bisexual Awareness Week!
Hi everyone! It's Bisexual Awareness Week! 😄
I wanted to make a post explaining what bisexuality is and debunking some myths!
What does it mean to be bisexual?
As with all labels in the rainbow community, bisexuality can mean something diferent to each individual. An inclusive definition of a bisexual person is someone who is sexually attracted to more than one gender. For me, I'm pansexual, which means I can experience attraction to people regardless of their gender 😊
What is bi-erasure?
Bi-erasure is the notion that bisexuality is not a valid sexuality. As a result of prejudice and gendered stereotyping, biphobia and the erasure of bisexual people is still prevalent both within and outside of rainbow communities. All sexualities are valid, but sometimes being bi you can feel a bit in the middle.
Let's bust some myths!
- You're not just confused. Bisexual people are often accused of being "confused" – that they haven’t figured who they’re “really” attracted to. That’s totally not true.
- This isn't a "stepping stone". Being bisexual isn’t a stepping stone to being gay. They are both valid and entirely whole as sexualities.
- If you're currently with a partner of one gender, you can still be bisexual. You don't become less valid because of the relationship you're currently in!
- We don't have to "choose one day". Everyone can change how they identify throughout their lives, but some people don’t at all.
- We're not more likely to cheat! Just because we have the capacity for attraction to more than one gender does not mean that we will engage in more relationships, particularly cheating!
Sending lots of Bi Pride to you all!
