Let's look at it this way. It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing. You don't get formals every year.
Do your parents want you to go? Have you spoken to them about it? Maybe they would be delighted to help you get there - who knows?
As for doing the real spending during the holidays, that's totally understandable. You've worked hard for years now, and you deserve that break.
Maybe it's not about not doing either, but rather, knowing how to budget and spend wisely? For example, you can hire a tux instead of buying one? Another way to think about it, you may buy this tux and you'll end up wearing it more than once?
