Thanks for sharing. It can be a hard decision to make. One of the biggest things an autism diagnosis can do is give you a better understanding of yourself and help you to know how to make your world more manageable. There are also more specific accommodations for work and educational settings that become available with an autism diagnosis. Regardless of if you follow it up or not, you’d still be autistic if you meet the diagnostic criteria. You’d just wouldn’t be diagnosed.
I found the people close to me didn’t treat me differently, they just had a better understanding of how I experience the world. The people around you are kind of used to you and your mannerisms, so a diagnosis doesn’t change the way the act towards you too much. There are some people that will treat you differently just because your autistic and it can be frustrating. But usually, these types of people will find any reason to treat someone differently.
Honestly, it’s completely up to you. If you think it will be beneficial in one way or another, (even if you don’t share it with other people) it may be worth doing.
