I love everyone's links, suggestions and conversations so far. AAMAZING! Here's a song that makes me want to jump around and love myself a whole lot! It's by trans guy Ryan Cassata who is a musician, activist speaker and all round amazing human! Also, the video has a bunch of queer peeps in it which I love! Definitely worth watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suURF_a2CZE

I'll start it off with an article I found on Buzzfeed of artistic motivational messages in honour of Coming Out day a couple of days ago. Check it out here. So cool! They even have a video showing the designers creating the images as well.

Marriage equality and Safe Schools content (among other stuff) in the media and in everyday life has been getting a lot of people in the community down for a while now. With all the negativity and hate, this thread is a place to talk it out, and also to share the positive stuff that's happening in the community because there is SO MUCH of that too! Post articles about cool stuff people in the queer community are doing, random acts of kindness, positive conversations etc or talk about how you're feeling or getting through all the negative stuff. It's up to you! You don't have to identify as LGBTIQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer +) to post either, let's ALL share the love and feels

Hey @Marcus29 It's great to hear that you went to a social group! Those kind of things can be really difficult to go to, especially when you're feeling the way you do right now. I agree with @Bree-RO in that making friends can take time, as can fitting into a new social space that you are unfamiliar with. At the same time though, if you feel it's not working for you, don't limit yourself to just one group. If this one is not the right fit, try another one! Sometimes it can take a while for us to find a place that feels comfortable. I'm interested to know if you currently have support in the form of a counsellor or psychologist? Having the support from your parents and your neighbour is great, but maybe having some extra face to face support from a mental health professional might help as well? I know it did for me when I was going through some tough times and I felt like there were certain things I couldn't share with the people I knew around me. In the mean time, check out this fact sheet on making friends and building your social network

That's so cool that you're in a band @j95 ! Music is such a great form of expression and just a great way to have some fun! I'm looking forward to having Japanese food for dinner tonight. I found this cool place that does really great food and now I simply drool at the thought of it haha.

@Fee I totally know what you mean! And I agree with all the "in moderation" comments. I find myself really bad with self control when it comes to chocolate so these days I'll buy a bar of chocolate rather than a block so I don't INHALE THE WHOLE THING. haha I pretty much like anything Cadbury. Congrats on getting your licence @khaleesi_18 ! 1. I've just finished planting my herb garden - gardening is my new found happy activity, it's so relaxing. 2. I have a big to do list this week and I've made my way though more than half of it! 3. Feeling proud of some of the work I've done recently, and feeling motivated to make positive change in the world.

@Bay52VU This is a really great topic for discussion (thank you!). I can totally relate on feeling uncomfortable in group situations like this and not wanting to give people too much information about my own mental health. I think it's great that your workplace is doing a training on mental health though - I think it shows that people and society and slowly starting to treat the topics more seriously. Obsiously there's still a long way to go but that's a great start! I totally agree with @DruidChild in preparing yourself with the materials before hand so you know what to expect from the training/presentation. Additionally figuring out some boundaries for yourself before hand to determine what you are, and what you aren't willing to share with the group might be a good idea - that way you won't feel put on the spot should certain topics come up. Is there a colleague at your work that you can talk it through with beforehand? It might be good to have that in person support on the day as well. Plus you might find there are other people going through similar thought processes and concerns as you @tomo_13 The things your school is doing to improve mental health sound amazing!

My thoughts exactly @PeanutJelly148 HALLOWEEN! (yay) What is your favourite word? JIGGLE. I've noticed when I'm laughing hysterically, my belly jiggles uncontrollably and I think it's hilarious so then I laugh even harder. I therefor use the word jiggle a lot #bodypositiviy haha What are the advantages and disadvantages of being the height you are? advantage - being able to see relatively well at concerts and movie theatres. Disadvantages would be being really bad at hide and seek? haha Do you talk in your sleep? If you do, whats the last thing you know you said? I don't think I do?! Have you ever met anyone famous? or who would you like to meet? Hilary Duff is my queen forever and someone I would LOVE to meet. I've met a few famous peeps like Tegan and Sara and Tobey Maguire. Not just randomly on the street though. I have a fear of running into someone famous and not knowing what to say! (to the point where I have conversation points organised with the celebrities I'd like to meet. I run through conversations in my head with them when I have nothing better to do. Does anyone else do this???) What is your favourite lolly in the party mix? Milk bottles all the way!!!! (Now I'm craving them! haha)

I can't believe it's August already! Hello Everyone, I hope you're having a lovely August so far 1. Describe the state of your bedroom, are you really messy, or pretty clean? I just had a rent inspection so it's mostly clean at the moment (emphasis on the MOSTLY haha) 2. Can you recite the alphabet backwards? If no, what letter do you get stuck on? I'll be honest, I get stuck after Z! I'll have to get practicing 3. Do you take the little shampoo and conditioner bottles from hotels? Why, why not? Of course! I have to get my moneys worth. They're actually really handy for short trips as well 4. Are you earlobes attached or free, can you roll your toungue and what's your eye colour? Earlobes attached yes (I think?), I can make my tongue into a U shape, is that considered making my tongue roll? And my eye colour is blue, my fav colour 5. What's your favourite sport and your least favourite? This can include things like gaming not just whatever is in the Olympics these days. I love AFL to watch & soccer to play. @khaleesi_18 totally get what you mean about tennis and cricket reminding you of summer/happy feels. I used to play and watch tennis so much as a kid in the Summer (Australian Open especially)

What are some things we can do in our everyday lives to make sure people are proud to be a geek or a nerd? I think the main thing for me would be to be kind and non judgemental about other peoples interests. I feel like you don't have to be interested in the same thing to have a conversation with someone! I love listening to people talk about their interests/fandoms/favourite subjects etc. I think it's fascinating that someone is a) so interested in a topic that they are talking about it so passionately and b) willing to share that information with me. What an honour! PLUS hearing people talk about what they are interested in is what gets me interested in things. I'm always open to trying new things so I love hearing people talk about what they're into!

This list is epic @N1ghtW1ng I don't even know where to begin with this! haha. I think the next time I'm in the mood for some tv/movie time I'm going to check back on your post for suggestions! I like DC and Marvel. Am just getting into Star Wars now (don't know how it's taken my this long!). I try to watch all the new superhero shows coming out on Netflix too!

What are you favourite nerdy and geeky interests? (favourite subjects at school/uni/tafe/life AND/OR favourite fandom/tv show/ comic book movie etc) Hands down my favourite topic at school was Defense Against the Dark Arts (haha a little HP reference there for you). It was actually english! I love writing and I love words. I also love reading, and I just love how the formation of words, and language can communicate ideas, I think it's amazing! Favourite geeky thing would be Harry Potter (of course). I also like Superhero movies and tv shows - They have made me more interested in reading comic books. My favourite comic book is Jessica Jones which I got into after watching the tv series.

That's making sense to me now, the whole geek getting dropped thing @N1ghtW1ng I really don't hear that term nearly as often as nerd now that you mention it. Onto our next quesition: What are you favourite nerdy and geeky interests? (favourite subjects at school/uni/tafe/life AND/OR favourite fandom/tv show/ comic book movie etc)

Omg @N1ghtW1ng I am totally one of those Harry Potter fans who gasps when someone says they haven't read the books or seen the movies or "aren't really that interested in it" haha And it definitely makes sense that the success of super hero movies/harry potter movies etc have lead to a big boom in popularity for geek/nerd culture

It might be different in different social groups? In my experience I feel like when someone is so into comic books and knows all the characters etc I am very uncool because I don't know as much about comics as them :P How do you think the media (tv, movies, books, news, magazines etc) play a role in forming our ideas about being a geek or a nerd? I think the media used to portray the geek or the nerd as uncool, though now it's quite the opposite. Remember how at the start of this topic we were questioning whether those words are really even used much at all anymore? I think the media might have a lot to do with that. I read a lot of articles and watch a lot of videos on social media about amazing things people are doing because of their interest in a e.g. fandoms or their intellectual abilities and it's all being portrayed in such a positive light!

You definitely did get the last laugh didn't you @stonepixie ! Saying something like "Thanks" in response as @N1ghtW1ng suggested is always a great way to handle it because let's be honest, being a geek and/or nerd should be considered a compliment!
