Hi all. Just thought I'd pop in briefly. I agree with the general view. We have family, friend, romantic relationships because we have a deep sense of need for others. Relationships provide a space for us to support and be supported, learn to trust, be listened to, and give and take, etc.

I should be working on an assignment due Monday...so will just add a few for now. :P
Hearing about people volunteering and helping others GMH.
Sometimes I feel unsure about my appearance but it GMH when a loved one or even a complete stranger compliments me. Someone told me my glasses looked cool the other day :)

I'll take away from tonight that it's important not to give up and to keep practising. Every conversation has the potential to help you learn what you could do better ne x t time and also to provide the chance to learn more about others and the world around us.

Wow, thanks for joining in and sharing so many ideas @Birdeye! :D Good point about that you can be observant in order to find a topic to talk about. Maybe such as if they have nice shoes/hat, they have odd socks, their eyes or hair look good, etc. Or maybe you could ask if they've had uni classes if they have books with them, etc. :) Oh and I though this was an awesome description of the benefits: "It gives a feeling of community, belonging, and support" :)

So we know socialising can be tough or easy or sometimes a bit of a mi x ture, but... What are the benefits of having a social life/socialising?

@EloiseRose - I guess it's not so much about how many people you talk to but about how you communicate with them and knowing when it's acceptable to gossip about things and when to tread cautiously, especially as some people are more sensitive to their life details being share whereas some welcome it. :)

Maybe even turning into a bit of a gossip?
True, that could definitely be a risk and that could impact trust and stuff in your social circles/friendships, etc if you share too much, especially of personal stuff.

@stonepixie That's a pity that they aren't open to hearing/talking more about your volunteer work, especially when there's the chance they could learn something new or challenge the views they hold.

What is the trap in being overly social, if there is one?
I guess you could risk making others feel uncomfortable or even not focus enough on your other commitments.

@stonepixie So true. If you give up you could miss out on some great chances to get to know others and miss out on doing some fun stuff that interests you.

@stonepixie I think it's perfectly fine to be cautious when you first meet new people. I tend to sort of gage how well they're going to accept certain info and if I'm worried I stick to the basics for a while of that I'm a uni student, volunteer, etc.

@EloiseRose wrote: Although the BEST ADVISE i ever got was "WHENEVER YOU ARE STUCK FOR CONVERSATION ASK THE PERSON YOU ARE TALKING TO ABOUT THEM" - why? because everyone loves talking about themselves haha
Hahahaha. It is true in a lot of cases though. Especially if the person has a lot of different things they do with their life or an interest they're especially passionate about. :) I think it can also be good to ask the person straight out what they do (study work, etc) or what they'd like to do.

Great points! We even started to branch into some of the reasons why some people could find it hard to socialise such as an x iety )or other mental health issues) or bad past e x periences or a shy personality...So what practical tips would you give someone who was struggling to be social?

Why do some people find it easier to socialise than others? What sorts of skills or attributes/character traits do they have?
-Firstly, haha, agreed on the interesting things to say @EloiseRose ...unless I know someone well my conversations tend to start off fairly boringly too.
-I guess they also find it easier because they're more outgoing and aren't afraid to put themselves out there or just strike up a conversation with anyone, even a stranger on the street or around their work or school/uni campus.

Use this thing called a phone. Actually dial it and use it for what it was invented for, Hahaha.
Haha. Funny you should phrase it that way @stonepixie I saw a youtube video the other day where some kids/young teens were looking at rotary phones (the ones with actual dials on them) and they had no idea how to use them because they were so used to their smart phones.

Loved this bit especially "being polite even when you don't really feel like it or don't really know the person that well" Sometimes socialising can be tough, but sometimes it can also be worth pushing through :)
