How to support someone going through a tough time

  • Actively listen to them - make them feel heard, provide your full attention.
  • Simply be there for them - offer a shoulder to cry on, check in with them, hang out with them.
  • Offer to assist them - e.g., completing small tasks for them.
  • Respect their boundaries - allow them to dictate how much support/space they need and what details they wish to share.
  • Validate their feelings / avoid toxic positivity - acknowledge what they are going through and avoid telling them how they should feel; avoid statements such as "it could be worse" or "everything happens for a reason."
  • Encourage self-care!
  • Encourage them to seek professional support - e.g., psychologist, counsellor, crisis support if needed (i.e., Lifeline).

Hi @Green_Ghost,

This is a really nice post from you and we should all incorporate these strategies in our lives to offer support to others and also appreciate how we can receive support as well. Thank you very much! ❤️

@Green_Ghost This is such a sweet and helpful post!

Also, I love the GIF you used from Spirited Away; it's one of my favourite movies!

Hey @Green_Ghost

This is such a great list! It’s also important to make sure you’re also taking care of yourself. Looking after others requires looking after yourself.

Thank you @Green_Ghost for posting this. I feel it is really important to just be there when they need you but also, give them their space. I think it really helps the person and makes them feel safe and open up.

Welcome back!
