@stonepixie I know what you mean about being "emasculating". I was just told I wasn't welcome on a trip with my friends because I am a girl and that would make them feel like they had to act different......- Mark as New

It's not my fault I'm not embarrassed by natural bodily functions and can talk about them out in the open. Hahaha.I know what you mean @copse it is kind of like ... wha???? Just be yourself 24/7 no matter the company.

Ignore the haters! Call people out on their sexism.

This also just came to mind (little irrelevant to the question) but i feel like male stereotypes and expectations are changing, in some ways. Take Mitch Clark, an AFL player for example... He openly suffers from a mental illness and so far I have only ever seen support for him, but 20 or 15 years ago, I don't things would be the same.- Mark as New

that's a really good point @j95
I also think it can be really powerful when people who are in the public eye are able to be open about mental health. It can be inspiring and motivating for some of us. I agree that things might not have been the same if this happened say 20 years ago.

@j95 that's a great point and I hope the support continues and allows other footy players (and people in general) open up- Mark as New

i think starting small makes it a bit easier. I slowly started to open up to a few of my best friends who I felt like I could really trust, and over time it began to feel more comfortable with other people.

What are some techniques you can use to feel comfortable and confident about who you are? This can be a really hard task! But I think finding positive people who accept you for who you are is a great way to value yourself and learn to accept yourself for who you are too, and can help you get to a place where you can accept yourself without external forces

Have you ever been in a situation where you have felt the need to fit the social “mould”, or fit the stereotype, even when it isn’t necessarily how you would normally behave?
High school! Oh man that place was rough. Half the cohort thrived and the other half were squashed by it.

Crap. I totally forgot about high school. If there's one place that I felt those pressures the most it was there! All of that stuff didn't seem to matter anywhere near as much once I went to uni!

ALL.THE.TIME.
Particularly in my workplace or around sporting clubs. I'm slowly getting better at not feeling the need to fit.

Mostly when i'm with male friends, but almost every day to some small extent! For example, I sometimes feel like I need to act more manly and tough around my male friends. i even notice that sometimes the way I talk changes around them!
@j95 that's awesome that you're getting better at not feeling the need to 'fit in'. I imagine that it would be tough if you're working in a male dominated environment.

I work in a particularly "blokey" environment, and a lot of my friends are all of a similar nature, so I often find the pressure to "man it up" or be a bit more macho than I normally am. It's a difficult dilemma, because I enjoy spending time with them, but maybe I wouldn't fit in as well if I didn't play that character... I think I have started accepting who I really am though and my friendship circle is starting to reflect that too- Mark as New

I wonder how many tradies just act all macho for the sake of the stereotype. @j95My entire life can be described in one sentence: It didn't go as planned and that's okay. ツ

@stonepixie I've often thought the same thing... I sometimes feel like everybody is putting on a mask and if everybody just took it off at the same time we would all be so much happier!
