So once you do have money, how do you keep that from being dwindled away on expensive neccessities so you can do something you really want with it? (Traven, car, house, clothes, etc)?

Again I just try and only spend money on what I really need. I tend to have more motivation in saving when I'm actually saving for something big!

@stonepixie I feel like you have just changed my life

@florenceforever it's so much easier saving when there's a really big purpose for it! I think setting goals like this can help us.

If you don't already, get a separate account for savings.

Man ... if I was to rent my own place starting tomorrow, I feel as though I could furnish almost the whole house. Hahaha.

I just spent a good half an hour figuring out how much money I have left for food etc and it rounds about to 25/week for the next two weeks unless I fork out of my savings - eek!

However I am quite used to this and I usually save heaps by cooking as much as possible, and buying as much fresh produce as I can. Fruit and veg take up most of my shopping cart and usually doesn't cost more than $5-10. I try to buy a lot of fruit/veg that is on special in small amounts - enough to get me through the week. Other things in my shopping cart would be stuff like supermarket brand bread, rice or pasta, milk and yoghurt. I still have some meat and eggs in the fridge as I buy those in bulk and that's my source of protein sorted.

Basically if you make eating well a priority it's not too hard to manage 🙂

Hi @tdagirim ! Welcome!

It's great that you can cook and buy fresh produce!

The aim of tonight's session is to figure ways to save and still take care of your other needs like health which you already seem to be doing!

Black and gold/home brand can be better than brand stuff sometimes!

What are some ways you have found to save money?

Yesss home brand everything - its exactly the same as the other stuff and its usually made by the bigger brands but is cheaper because they dont have to pay as much for advertising or packaging or prime eyelevel shelf spots !!! (i feel very strongly about home brand)

I also go to the library for my books/dvds ! @florenceforever they have great Dvds!

Catching the bus or train instead of using my petrol especially if i am going to have to pay for parking

And also not being shy to say yes to petrol money when you drive someone around !

@florenceforever Start out with the main charity stores (like Anglicare, Salvation Army, Vinnes etc). They tend to colourcode their items and will have special sale days! Salvation Army does a thing where one colour will be 50% off all week and a second colour will be greatly reduced from Mon - Wed (If the original price is $6 or less, you pay $1. If the original price is $15 or less, you pay $3). It seriously blew my mind. Then I save up my hard earned cash for my 'Must have' items (ie. a new party dress for a wedding or a to-die-for pair of shoes online).

My mostly thrifted shoe collection from earlier this year. It's totally grown since then >_>

With clothes, I prefer to invest in really good pieces that will last for a long time and can be worn with anything like a few good coats or pairs of boot. They're all I live in during winter so I don't need to keep buying clothes.

I also shop at the fruit and veg place across the road from the supermarket. So much cheaper! AND I know I am supporting local producers. 🙂

I've done Live Below the Line for the past two years - where you eat off $2 a day for 5 days to raise awareness and funds for people living in extreme poverty.

It's really taught me how to budget and stretch food. $10 for 5 days is not easy! But it's very do-able

wow @florenceforever ! Share some of those tips

My pantry looked a bit like that too @florenceforever ! Lots of canned food.

On top of changing what I buy, I also try to change my eating habits. I try to moderate when I have snacks so I don't overeat and keep buying food that isn't good for me!

I tend to plan my meals around the specials as well. 🙂 I pack my own lunches, walk to the shops and back. I also take advantage of all the discounts one can get as a student!
