Like others have said, just getting to experience a different place... the people, the culture, the scenery, the FOOD, the history... I just love how it's such an adventure and I find in a truly freeing experience, being away from all your usual obligations... I know when I had a gap year after high school and went overseas for 5 months, I learnt a lot about myself and grew as a person, because in the end you can only rely on yourself in unfamiliar territory!
