[CHAT] Let's go travelling!

“My favourite thing is to go where I've never been” said Diane Arbus.

Sound familiar?

You can’t deny it, travelling is probably one of the top things on your bucket list right now, and will probably forever stay there, no matter how much travelling you do! Australia is over 7.5 million square kms and home to over 400 indigenous nations - and of the 14 ecosystems defined worldwide, Australia is home to eight...  Then beyond that the earth boasts over 200 countries, many of which have their own cultures, beliefs, attractions, languages and food (oh my goodness, food!) that many have the strong desire to experience.

Travelling can come in many shapes and forms: travelling with family, friends, your school, university trips, with religious/volunteer groups, going on tours and even just by yourself. You might stay inside within your own state, visit another state or territory in Australia, or even use your passport to enter an entirely different country! You could take a plane, train, bus, boat, car, caravan or any combination of them!

Travelling gives you the opportunity to experience life from a different point of view. It can even change the point of view on the world. I travelled to Melbourne so much that I decided I wanted to live there, and now I am! Right now I have friends travelling in Europe, Asia, South America, Africa and North America. Each has found their own unique travelling styles – who they travel with, where they go, where they stay and how they spend their time and money.

The magic of travelling is that you can make it your own. There is no set one way to travel. You can do what works best for you to have the most rewarding time possible. However, travelling can have its low points, and we’ll be talking a bit about them as well and how we could avoid them in future (anyone else been the victim of pickpocketing in Paris!?)

Personally I have been lucky enough to travel quite a lot. I’ve been to Europe several times, and many different countries in Asia. And yet I still feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface of seeing the world. Travelling excites me and reminds me that the world is virtually limitless.

My family so I don't have to worry about them!

Maybe some VERY close friends.

That would take a lot of stress off you @FootyFan26 🙂

I've never really travelled with friends before, I don't know how I would go. Have you before?

Question 7: Who do you like going travelling with?

I've learnt the hard way that me and my oldest sister do NOT TRAVEL WELL TOGETHER... 😕

I've travelled a LOT with my family. Would love to travel with friends 🙂

Question 7: Who do you like going travelling with?

My sister is my number 1 travelling buddy. We travel so well together, even though we both like to be the one holding the map 🙂

I also like travelling with my friends or partner.

I tend to feel very stressed if I rock up to a new city by myself, so it's nice to have someone with me to help figure out where the city centre is, or where to head for a coffee.

That's so cool @Georgie! Is there much of an age difference between you and your sister? I travelled around Asia with my sister for a month (she's 10 years older than me) and we didn't travel at all well together! We had three friends with us, so that helped a little bit.

What is your number one tip for people who are travelling on a budget?

1. Buy food from supermarkets and have picnics! Instead of going out for breakfast/lunch/dinner every meal!

2. Keep a track of your spendings and try and cut back where you can - ie spending $5 on icecream EVERYDAY in Italy can really start to add up...

3. Catch public transport when you can as opposed to taxis 🙂

Planning and pre-booking/pre-purchasing can save SO much money!

@florenceforever I think on my Europe trip I spent the most money on food. And then gifts for my family. I did buy a couple of things for myself though, which I'm proud of. I'm not much of a buyer of useless things.

I spend SO much money on food! But I don't regret it 🙂 I do regret spending money on crappy touristy items that I can never resist at the time!

Last question: How do you look after your physical and mental wellbeing whilst travelling?

How do you look after your physical and mental wellbeing whilst travelling?

For a while I used to travel with a little book with some ideas for things to do if I felt sad or homesick. Eg, call or message someone, go for a walk, listen to music, have an early night etc. And then some ideas strategies to help me get back on track.

In terms of physical health, I think just trying to keep in mind that you can't eat stroopwafels for every meal, no matter how awesome they are. Remember to eat fruit (unless you're in India), drink lots of water, and get enough sleep.

Great tips @Georgie 🙂

I also found writing in a travel journal a nice way to finish each day - but I know that's not for everyone!

To look after my physical and mental wellbeing I try to make sure I get enough rest. And give myself some alone time away from others if it's in a group or just away from other people.

I think the best thing for me is not travelling!

I find that either going with my family or keeping in close contact would also help me ensure they are safe and lessen my stress levels.

I think being aware of any flus or viruses that are going around the place you are going is a good idea so you don't get them yourself and be able to take preventative measures.

It definitely sounds like traveling with your family would lessen your stress levels @FootyFan26! It's great that you can recognise that.

They look nice!

Better not think about food, I have to go to sleep after this since no one knows I'm a part of this site and am participating in GR sessions so if they see me awake they'll wonder what I'm doing!

Welcome back!
