moving out

My name is Kate and i'm 19.
I currently do not have a job as im studying five full days a week but am desperate to move out.
My home life is not ideal but  is not terrible - my mum can support me and is very loving, however my sister is a drug addict and you can imagine that makes living at home a hard situation.
I'm currently getting youth allowance from centrelink.
Is there any way I can move out or get assistance from somewhere?

@safari93 & @ElleBelle provided you with some cool tips there. did you get a chance to call centrelink about any further financial assistance?

Hi @Luna_96 I completely empathise with how difficult it must be to live with a drug addict, especially a member of your own family. The ADF have some really comprehensive resources for the friends and family of addicts, and the ADIN have a searchable directory for support services in your area. Has you sister ever tried to seek help for her addiction before?

If you do decide to move out, you should be eligible for rent assistance but you would need to double check with Centrelink about which benefits you qualify for as a student. When I was at uni, the noticeboards around campus were always a good place to find cheap accomodation in sharehouses with other students.

Hey @Luna_96!! That sounds like a really tough situation you're going through at home, so it's understandable that you would want to move out. There are a few things you would probably want to consider before moving out:

  • Your studies - studying full time can be difficult when you are living independently. Would you consider going part-time at all? If you can't, perhaps it might be best to find a job that provides flexible working hours
  • Your finances - Try and find a stable job that will pay you enough and also find out from Centrelink whether you can claim more on your Youth Allowance
  • It might also be a good idea to ask your institution for help, as there may be a welfare department which could hook you up with useful info and maybe provide you with some essentials like clothing or crockery

We also have some more info on moving out, and of course you can always ask more questions 🙂
