High School and Uni Tips!

FEATURED

Hey guys!

I know most of us are starting high school or uni again within the next few weeks. It can be a daunting, challenging and stressful time, but it can also be fun, rewarding and full of growth.

In saying that, I thought we can share tips with each other to help us through the school year. A few things I've implemented with my studies over the years are:

  1. Making the due date of an assignment at least 2 days earlier than what it actually is. This has helped me so many times, and when I finally finish an assignment I get so relieved knowing that I actually had 2 more days to complete it!
  2. Starting the assignment/studying the exam as soon as you get the task sheet. This doesn't mean getting it all done within the first day of getting a new assignment, but I would research the topic, break down the criteria sheet and organise all the things I'd need to do to get it done.

I'd love to hear everyone's advice as well, and I hope we're all gonna be academic weapons this year! ðŸ“šðŸ¤“

Hi @happymunchkin, this is such a good idea! Some things I have found useful through high school and uni are:

  • Keeping track of feedback from assessments so I can refer to it in the future for other assessments
  • With lectures, I'd type up everything from the slides beforehand so that during the lecture I just need to write down what the lecturer says
  • Having a to-do list which I then use to allocate tasks to do on each day of the week (also it's satisfying to tick things off my list!)
  • Asking for help if I need it - I definitely did this a lot more in high school because at uni I found it a bit intimidating to email or talk to tutors and lecturers, so if there's one thing I regret not having done during my degree, it's to ask questions, especially about feedback and marks
  • While it is useful to talk to others in your class/cohort, try not to take every thing they say to be true! Sometimes people exaggerate things (like how much studying they have or have not done) or don't remember the details when recapping what a teacher said, so if you have any concerns, go to the teacher!

Hi @happymunchkin,

This is such a great post!

I think the tip to set the deadline for two days earlier is amazing. Wish I had thought of this as it would have made things so much less stressful! I also agree that starting a task as soon as you get it can be super helpful in breaking it down into more manageable steps.

Here are some things I consistently did:

  • Spend Sunday evening planning out the week ahead. This was great for locking in a study schedule and reminding myself of upcoming deadlines.
  • Don't be afraid to reach out for help. I primarily did this through my teachers and peers. However, my university also offered literacy and numeracy workshops. I believe many do so it's worth a search.
  • Remember to make time for yourself outside of your studies. I found I was more productive in the weeks where I was practicing self care. Maintaining a healthy sleep schedule was especially helpful.
  • Study in a space that feels relaxing to you. To me, this was one that was clean, not too noisy, had comfortable seating, and good lighting.

I hope this post was helpful and wish everyone the best of luck at high school and university this year! ðŸ’›

Heya @happymunchkin !

I love this post idea and will absolutely be checking back to read everyone's tips/tricks/suggestions! I love the making the due date two days earlier one, I do this a lot too and try to self-impose early deadlines.

One of my tips is to create a bit of a routine around study to help you get into the headspace and signal to yourself that it's time to lock in. For instance, before I start studying I always like to get my study space nice and tidy and make sure I've got everything ready that I could possibly need so that I don't need to get up and down. For me this is my laptop charger, paper, pens, and at least two different beverages (usually water and also something more fun like tea or coffee!) hehe 🙃.

Am looking forward to hearing from everyone else! 💜

Hi @happymunchkin this is a great post and can be really helpful to people who might struggle getting back into the routie of schooling.

My top two tips are:

1. Seek help if you need it! - If you don't understand an assignment or you don't know how to reference properly or even if you don't understand a slide that the teacher is teaching from, ask for help and clarification! Chances are there is someone else who doesn't get it too and will be grateful someone asked.

2. Remember to take time for yourself! - It is great to be dedicated and to work hard towards your goals but having self care to reset yourself especially during the stressful times like the exam period is crucial!

Happy studying everyone! 📚
