literally having a dilemma...

I'm honestly having a dilemma in between whether I would like to restart my certificate course to do it full time (since last year I did it part time) so that I can get student payments from a youth allowance if I were to apply for it as a student - because the thing is as much as I really dont wanna apply for jobs - as of right now, I haven't applied for any jobs but I do have a job interview coming up next week for a job I just applied recently and ummm yeah... I guess what im trying to say is that I just wanna be able to get a job based from the course that I'm studying (which is a bookkeeping job from a bookkeeping course) and just pursue a career on that (a bookkeeper) as a full time job, instead of looking for a part time job right now and then wait till I'll be able to study the course full time (if I was able to restart the course as a full time study I guess) I apologise if I am not making any sense here because I'm just having a hard time really.

Also, the thing about part time jobs right now, especially for retail and other customer service based jobs is that I'm not really keen on having to talk to people - but also having to potentially face some issues with some customers sometimes, as well as meeting other coworkers and everything like that because I'm not a social person and I usually hardly express myself when it comes to talking to people, meeting people (and even dealing with some rude people too) that aren't even my parents - because my parents are usually the ones whom I can fully express myself with. Whereas for everyone else that aren't my parents, then I usually just don't express myself.

Also, when it comes to coming to school or coming to work on a regular basis and having to see your coworkers and stuff everyday - for me it's something that I really like the least because really, there's always gonna be literally most or even all of these people that I'm always gonna be in the same place with that I don't even like.

Now I'm under job seeker and I'm also currently under a job agency/job provider, the thing is if im planning on starting a full time course at the last minute and decide to not look for part time work anymore, then yeah I'm gonna make things difficult not just for myself but also for them as well I guess 😕 but then I guess I would also have to explain it to my job consultant as well because I guess it seems like for a lot of people, they usually would do their course first before they look into doing either part time or full time work.

Hey @Blueberries

Thanks for sharing your thoughts,

Are you able to apply for youth allowance whilst studying part time? Maybe you could continue with your book keeping course part-time and receive youth allowance too.

If you were to start a full time course, what do you think you might study?

I think you should prioritise your wellbeing. If you think working retail might be overwhelming because of the social aspect, then it's okay to focus on your study at the moment. As you said, you can then look for work in a role you will be confident in like a book keeping position.

Have you spoken to your parents about your study/work ideas?

You got this 💜

Hi @Eleanor-RO

Apparently if you’re studying part time, then you’re not eligible for a student Youth Allowance or AUSTUDY - so I’d have to study full time in order to apply for a Youth Allowance in this case.

I’m not sure how I can go on to tell my career consultant about all this since this is all like last minute. But this is just a thought anyway, so maybe I might still like to work in retail part time since I have a job interview coming up soon. But at the same time thinking about that job interview and then potentially or possibly getting into that job does make me not looking forward to it pretty much because yeah, the social aspect and just - my pessimism of everything in general.

It sounds like you are facing a dilemma about whether to restart your certificate course as a full-time student to receive student payments or to pursue a job in bookkeeping without completing the course full-time. It's completely understandable that you are feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about what path to take.

It's important to weigh the pros and cons of each option and think about what will ultimately make you happiest and most fulfilled. If pursuing a career in bookkeeping is your ultimate goal, then it might be worth considering restarting your course as a full-time student to receive financial support while you study.

However, it's also important to consider your comfort level with part-time jobs, especially those that involve customer service. It's okay to recognize your limitations and seek out job opportunities that align with your strengths and preferences.

Ultimately, you should do what feels right for you and your career goals. It's okay to have a discussion with your job consultant about your plans and concerns, and they may be able to provide guidance and support. Best of luck to you!

Hi @Blueberries

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. It is disappointing that Youth Allowance is not given to those studying part-time. Maybe it's because they are assuming that those people are part-time because they are also working, but not everyone is in that situation and I think the government needs to find a better way of financially supporting students. Regardless, I am glad to hear that you have a job interview coming up, and that's already an achievement in itself.

What type of position are you up for? Within retail, there are also positions that put you away from the customer side of things. I believe working at coles or woolies, there's a good chance that you just do stock and are either at the back or doing your own thing re-filling shelves.

Hope you are well 💙

Hi @Anzelmo

I 100% agree that the government needs to find a better way to financially support people, especially those that aren't working but are studying part-time. I'll never understand why they have not done this already and as someone who struggles to keep up with a full time study and is scared to work at a job in particular - especially the customer facing roles, I'm still disappointed with them as well as Centrelink.

I've applied for a Casual Team Member position, and I'm not really looking forward to it. But regardless, I'll still need to attend because I just need to find a way to earn an income - and since I'm under jobseeking payments, I'm required to apply for jobs every month until I happen to get accepted into a job.

About the Woollies and Coles roles, I thought every team member that does the stock filling and all that are also required to serve customers at the checkouts and stuff - or am I wrong about that?

Thank you. Hope you are well too. ❤️
