😐
Ok so.. I have a feeling that I won’t be able to fully complete and graduate from the current course I’m doing right now because of 2 subjects within this course that I know for a fact that I’m not gonna pass. I had to drop one of them out last term (we had that class from February till the end of March) because of one of assessments which was one of the hardest and most stressful assessments I’ve ever done within a course like this - mind you it was a supervised assessment (meaning it was a test that we had to do in class) and I hate that so much. And with one of the units im doing right now, there’s gonna be another assessment like this coming up, and I’m not looking forward to it at all.

Hi there ,
It sounds like you are feeling overwhelmed and discouraged about the upcoming assessment.
It is understandable and very common to feel this way about in-class supervised assessments as sometimes we can perceive these environments as added pressure in already a stress-inducing situation. I know for me personally, I used to feel stressed about in-class tests, but over time this stress was alleviated when I came up with some strategies that helped remind me that I have the ability to do my best. For example, I took some deep breaths and focused on the moment, whether that was before or during the in-class test.
I am wondering if you have any strategies that you have previously found to relieve your stress - sometimes talking to your teacher or a tutor to see if there are any resources available to help you prepare for the assessment can be very useful.
Let us know if you have any thoughts on this. 😊
Hi @SD2247
So a few days ago we were told that we're gonna be getting a practice supervised assessment starting from tomorrow and the teacher said we're free to do it in our own time, which thank god practice supervised assessments/practice tests are becoming a thing at uni now (especially for my course). Last week I had to email the uni asking them what happens if I don't attend the supervised assessment for my course and then they had to send the email to my course coordinator and have my course coordinator calling me. So when I had a chat to my course coordinator about it, it felt relieving because he was the first one that told me about the practice supervised assessment.
Hi @Blueberries, great to hear from you! I can definitely appreciate your stress and concern about not graduating from your course if you're unable to pass these two tricky subjects - the idea of failing or having to do a subject again is incredibly daunting and can make assessments feel even more intense than they already are. You mentioned that you dropped one of the previous subjects that you were doing because the assessment was one of the most stressful ones you have had to do. Was there anything in particular that made this assessment stressful? It sounds like having the test in class was something that you found challenging, which I'm sure a lot of other students can relate to 😓
What kinds of things usually help you to manage your study stress and to get through tricky assessments?
It was basically the questions that I was unable to answer - and because the content overall was really hard to grasp the concepts of as well, that's pretty much why I wasn't able to answer those questions on the test. I know the same thing will go for the next upcoming one as well I guess.
Well, nothing... I just vent about it on here and also to my regular counsellor on kids helpline as well as watching YouTube videos and stuff like that.
Hey @Blueberries
It sounds like it was a pretty challenging assessment for you. I know that you mentioned that you think it will be similar for the upcoming one and I was wondering if perhaps there was anything you could do to help prepare you for it.
Assessments and exam stress can be challenging dealing with and sometimes it can be about finding the right rhythm and routine that works for you. We have a collection of resources about exam stress which may be helpful to have a look through. There's even some articles that provide some tips and tricks which might be useful.
It'd be really interesting to hear what other people's strategies and techniques are for dealing with assessments, study and exam stress. Maybe some of our other community members reading might be able to jump in and share some of their strategies with you?
I've looked at this article and all those things that have been listed sound like the things that I would exactly do https://au.reachout.com/articles/coping-strategies-for-exam-stress
But I was just thinking that what if i could just not attend the assessment/test and automatically get an unsatisfactory result for that test lol 😅 I think that'd be better.
Even when I've already done the chapter questions and just anything like that for me to revise and prepare myself for the assessment, I still wouldnt be able to do the questions on the assessment just like how I wasn't able to do all the questions on the previous assessment because of how extremely difficult they were for me to answer and that I couldn't figure out the answers of.
Hey @Blueberries ,
Sounds tough! Do they have any course tutors you can work with to help prepare you for the assessments?
Another option, are you able to by-pass these units and come back to them at a later time? Hopeful by then, you have built more understanding about the subject content and requirements?
Sorry so many questions, but do you think it is text anxiety or the actual course content that is the issue?
I hope we can workshop some solutions together with you!
No.
what do you mean by 'by-pass'? i can at least drop out this unit (but i dont want to though cause otherwise i'd have to do that unit again early next year) and i haven't been able to build some understanding or knowledge of the subject content yet.
it's the actual content that's the issue.
Hey @Blueberries 😊
It's understandable that you don't want to do drop the unit otherwise you will have to do this unit again.
I know you mentioned that content was the issue. Content can be really hard to understand which is why it can be really helpful to find ways of breaking it down so that it's easier for you to understand - we all have very different learning styles and finding the right one, and the right ways can make it so much easier.
I was wondering if you were able to have a look through any of the other articles to find some study tips? I know you looked through the coping strategies one which listed all the things that you're already doing which is great to hear. But maybe there might also be some helpful study strategies?
Well I'm not bothered to look for those study guides because I never used any tips from them. Plus I find them to be useless and not worth it anyway.
Makes sense @Blueberries , we all learn differently.
I hope you can find some study supports where you are - just so you can get a bit of help to understand the main concepts. Sometimes, once you get the main concepts, it makes it much easier to piece the other pieces together.
I'm also thinking, what is your preferred way of learning? Some people prefer to learn using hands-on materials, some are visual learners, some prefer to hear the content. Once you understand how you learn, you can then perhaps use some of those strategies? For example, for me, I prefer to read content, whereas I know others prefer to watch content.
Whatever it is, it is important that your voice is heard right now. We hear how hard you are finding things, and we want you to know you are not alone - we are listening and sitting with you.
Hope things get easier for you soon.
