How to get money fast?

Hey everyone,

So I'm in a bit stuck at the moment, as I need to get $1200 in about a week and a bit to buy a plane ticket to surprise my boyfriend for his birthday.

I've done everything I could up to now and have saved as much as I could and did little jobs, yet there's nothing at the moment during winter.

His birthday's really soon and I'm not sure how I will be able to get that much money in such short time.

Thanks,
Jakob

Well, just try to borrow money from your friends or family, OP. I had a similar situation as you two years ago. Also needed some money to buy a ticket. My friend Mark told me about a company I contacted them and they said that they will give us a money with a 3 % interest rate. Right now I almost payed it off - sold some stuff I don't need, saved a lot of money by NOT buying stuff I don't need, etc. If you didn't solve your problem yet, you can try contacting these guys.

Well, I think the best way to get money and not get into jail is obtaining a credit or a loan, LOL. It this option fits for you, of course.

Hey @Jakob that's an interesting challenge you're facing there! I wonder if @Noel-Moneycare could help, he knows a lot about stretching budgets as far as they can go!

Also, to get the conversation going, what's your budget look like? How much are you spending, vs how much are you saving?

Also have you had a look at cheap flight sites for something a little less?

I'm not spending anything at the moment, and not getting any income either.

I've looked at several sites, and have found cheapest of around $1500 without insurance.

Hi Jakob,

It all depends on what income you are getting at the moment, working, centrelink benefit??. You may have options depending on your type of income.

Is you flight OS or internal, if internal what other options do you have.

Hey Noel,

My flight is OS, and haven't got any income or centrelink at the moment. I'm afraid that it would take to long for an application.

Hmm @Jakob well we've got to find an income source by the sounds of things! So we might as well start somewhere. Is there a place you could do some work either online or offline? What kind of things are you interested in doing?

If you're not able to work at the moment, then are you eligible for centrelink? Could you get that application in and get a saving's plan going?

In a bit of a tricky situation @Ben-RO, I've been job searching for about 3 weeks unfortently have not found anything. Pretty open to most things.

As far as Centrelink goes, I don't think I would have enough time to process it all and get an application approved in time.

@Jakob can't hurt to get started and they do generally back pay from the date of application so the sooner you let them know you need help, the better.

What kind of skills do you have what kind of work do you do? I think i remember some of them fro your Builder application, but you'll have to tell us all again because that's confidential!

I'll check it out now. Smiley Happy

Well, I have done quite a lot for a teenager, I've done tour guiding, hospitality as well as online work with hosting companies and community management. So there is quite a number of skills, it's just  finding the right job.

Hey @Jakob,

I really want to wish you luck on this money situation. 🙂 this is tricky but there are heaps of things you could possibly do.

There are some restaurants that hire people fairly quickly and start instant work as well as fish n chips places or pizza. This may be a good starting point, even if it is temporary.

You could also consider house cleaning or gardening in your local area. You'd have to do door knocking and put in some ads but it could be worth it. Same with baby sitting or house sitting!

Also - have you got anything you might like to possibly sell or do a garage sale?

Another option - do you possibly have a friend or family member that may be willing to give you a loan?

I hope it all goes well. 🙂 good luck!

Try and get Centrelink if you can, it may be a pain to sign up for but in the long run it will help to have a somewhat steady income. I find if you go in in person and make sure you get there early (it opens at 8.30 so as close to that time as possibly) they can be very helpful and you also won't have long waiting periods either!

In terms of needing money fast have you thought about babysitting for friends and family? Or even asking friends and family if they need any odd jobs done and they are willing to pay you to do (stuff like gardening, cleaning, walking their dogs are all good options).

I am currently unemployed myself and I take a girl out with Down Syndrome for 2 hours a week which is some extra cash in hand (It covers my board which I need to pay every 2 weeks to my parents) which adds up and means I can save some of my Centrelink money every fortnight. I got this job as my sister (who has Down Syndrome too) is best friends with her.

Gumtree often has a lot of odd job ads posted if you can be bothered to wade through all the random adverts.

Speaking of Gumtree another thing you can do is post stuff for sale on there for some extra cash. You can sell old textbooks, old video games and any thing you don't need but may be of use to someone. At the end of year 12 my sister put all her textbooks on Gumtree and actually made some decent money.

Hi Jakob,
Long shot ,but if you have been working for the last 12 months and paid tax, if you lodge a tax return you may be entitled to a tax refund ??

All the best ,if its next year take the opportunity now to start putting some money away when you start receiving some centrelink. Having a little nest egg provides you with a lot more freedom to do the things that matter to you most 🙂

Whoa, yeah you have done heaps! You've got quite a few very valuable skills there @Jakob!

It kind of sounds like right now any job is better than no job? Is there something you could do for like... a few weeks just to get a bit more cashflow? Where are you hunting for jobs currently?

Been doing some job hunting on seek as well as indeed and just the daily local newspaper @Ben-RO.

I think in most cases it will and can be hard to get a job for only a few weeks since most jobs would like you to continue full-time/casual.

In terms of job hunting you might want to check out Indeed.com as that often uncovers a lot of extra jobs in a wider range of areas (for example if I type in 'Customer Service' it will not only come up with office jobs but retail and other jobs that I may have missed on Seek due to my search wording).

Also have you thought about revamping your resume? Mine while it had been updated it hadn't been reformatted in quite a while. I showed it to some friends for their feedback and was told that resumes should have some colour to them, which will make it standout on a pile. I did all my headings in a dark blue along with my name which will hopefully give me a much needed edge.

True, but also that's where you're at at the moment! Seems like the sooner you get something, anything, the sooner you can get some cash put away for this flight 🙂

Could you get a job for a couple of weeks and see how you go? There's no rule saying you have to stay in a job after a couple of weeks. You could also let them know that you've got to take some time off a bit after starting.

Here's a freelance site where you might be able to get some work

https://www.fiverr.com/

I know there are others out there.

Another thought, if you can't quite make it in time, could you let him know that you're saving up and that you're going to visit him? Does that kinda make sense? I know it's not quite  as amazing, but it might be nice still 🙂

Welcome back!
