Not Had a Crush in Years

I am 17, and have lived in Australia for about 3 and a half years since moving from another country.

A guy in the grade below me (who I went to high school with but didn’t know very well) was in my group for a task in Drama, and we were cast opposite each other in our school production a few weeks ago. Possibly because of this, and also because I noticed him alone a few times, I would go over to chat to him around class time. We now chat a fair bit in class and get along pretty well.

I wonder if he might like me. Today he complimented me (telling me that I looked nice) and, when I couldn’t find my workbook, hopped up and started to look for it for me. He’s always been pretty nice to me, and I’ve had this kind of sense that he might feel something for a little bit.

It’s made me start to think about how I’ve not really had a crush for about 3 or 4 years. The last crush I remember having was at the beginning of high school, when I was about 13. I did briefly date someone 2 years ago, but quickly realised that they felt more for me than I did for them and that I liked them better as a friend so I broke it off. Things were awkward for a while, but we’ve managed to become pretty friendly again through Drama classes we’ve had together at school.

For a long time I’ve wondered if I might be asexual, but I’m not sure if this means I might be on the aromantic spectrum as well? I don’t dislike the idea of being in a relationship - I even feel like I would like to be in one sometimes - but I haven’t really felt anything towards anyone for a long time. I’ve known friends or other people at school who I’ve thought looked nice and seemed interesting, but it’s like just as I’ve thought I could have a crush on them, any kind of feeling goes away. I feel like something is wrong and a bit out of place, since, particularly at this age, people get crushes often and really easily.
