I hear your dilemma. As much as you want to contact him, you know he does not want to be contacted. I can see your mature approach to this in that you want to respect his wishes.
Unfortunately, it's not really my place to tell you whether to or not to contact him. By talking about it, I hope you will find clarity so that you can make whatever step feels right to you.
It may be worth writing down some pros and cons, and also considering what you want to gain from contacting him. That is, if you do contact him, will that change that fact that he is not ready for a relationship while you are?
