Omg @Stealth_ninja that is so true. When I am having a home day I get so bored and contact people just so that I can keep busy. That will be a challenge tomorrow for you by the sounds of it!

The one Monday I am free it totally slips my mind that daylight savings had started again in the eastern states!

Being ‘on’ and connected all the time can definitely take a lot out of us. How do you know when you’re overloading yourself with commitments?

For me, I know when I cannot seem to fall asleep at night thinking about all the tasks on my never ending list that I need to complete, this basically results in feeling tired the next day that I hardly get anything done..

@smiley_
I am totally in your boat! If I can't sleep because I'm thinking about all the things, then I've gone and overloaded myself!

@Craycray17 I do that too! If I find myself being unable to sleep, not feeling hungry at mealtimes, being generally a bit of a mess, etc I know I need to slow down and take care of myself. Although for a while actually doing that was another story hahaha

This one is one that I preach without practising, I admit! I feel myself getting exhausted, slacking off at work or studying, and i actually get a bit crabby when I've got too much on. So I guess these are my warning signs to know I've got a lot on!

When I've got so much to do and so little time in that I don't actually have time to take care of myself. But I am generally pretty good with it all and just look at what is coming up for me and try to juggle everything around 'me-time' and such.

I feel as though my warning signs would be different to other people, but I shall list some anyway. I guess the big one is when I feel sluggish, but generally push through it. When I CBF'd making dinner is when I know that I have way too much on my plate. Also, the places I volunteer at are pretty good at giving time off to look after my wellbeing. Because, you know, life happens.

haha @stonepixie I never want to make dinner 😛 I mean i do it but i don't really feel like doing it that often. Especially after a long day! But interesting!

Drumroll for the next question...

4. What do you think is the best thing to do when you feel overwhelmed with all of your responsibilities?

Prioritise!

See if you can get extra time for things, Ask yourself if you can lay off on some of your responsibilities. Remind yourself of the end result.

I find that I don't actually enjoy what I'm doing because I'm hurrying through it waiting to go to the next thing! And I don't have time to just do whatever I want to do like go for a look around the shops or take the dog out, or if I do squeeze it in I'm busy thinking about how I have to get home. So setting strict time limits on leisure activities could be one.

No Kmart time = no Chill time.
I am using this as a way to check I'm not overloaded from now on !

So many factors! There seems to be a lot of different reasons why we tend to overcommit

Now, how to deal with that...

For me the golden rule is to have one day a week that is commitment free. If that day starts filling up with things I have to do as well. Then i know I'm doing too much.

I can also tell by how stressed I am feeling, although that's really not a very clever way of working out when I'm overloaded because it means I'm probably already overloaded lol.

This is something I really struggle with. It's almost like a restlessness - i want to be busy and have things to do so much so that sometimes when im not busy i get restless and then message like EVERYONE and then it all backfires cause I have too many things to do.

I have recently started scheduling in down time. Like tomorrow I have the whole day off, but I think I will still be restless and need people the whole time. Being connected pulls us away from being present and content in the present moment. It makes things hard and I do think our generation faces it.

@Stealth_ninja I definitely feel that too, this need to experience everything my parents missed out on because they didn't live here when they were young. My parents definitely drive home the idea sometimes that I am very privileged in ways they weren't. And of course some courses and paths of study are competitive, and you feel like you need an edge over everyone else

Why do you think it’s so common for young people to overcommit to responsibilities and commitments?

I think part of the problem is it's easy to say yes to a lot of things and get carried away in how awesome they will be. It's much harder to think about how all those awesome things will fit into a week.

I think we also are really good at forgetting that we all need down time, so we fill up our WHOLE week with things instead of having at least a day of time where you don't have to actually do anything if you don't want to.

2. Why do you think it’s so common for young people to overcommit to responsibilities and commitments?

For me it's a matter of learning all i can for my course, so I have taken on a lot of activities to allow myself to learn more about psychology and unfortunately this takes lots of time! With work, I like to earn money so that I can afford to spoil myself sometimes, so I guess I've always seen it as something important to be a part of whilst studying until I move into my field of study!
