Why do you think it’s so common for young people to overcommit to responsibilities and commitments?
I think it's partly FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and also a need that young people seem to have pushed on them to gather experience and practical knowledge alongside theory or study. It's not just about doing a course or getting the qualification anymore, you have to have experience as well to pad out the resume.
Also to answer your question @Craycray17, for me at least it took some self-awareness to know when I was pushing myself too had and take some time out, and to not feel guilty about self-care (and associating it with 'wasting time'). As for the actual self-care, its mostly cat videos and naps and simple pleasures

FOMO is such a big part of my life. I get FOMO over food I see on instagram and then spend all my time trying to find time to go to that place so i can eat that food.
Good point @safari93 about needing additional things alongside studies. Although I don't know if the average person does that, I know I did when I was in uni but I think it depends on what you're studying too and the competitiveness of it. Perhaps if you know how competitive it is you really do need to have some self-care/and a lot of awareness of your limits. For me its kind of about fulfilling this idea that i'm "young and free" and pressure from this feeling that i've been given an opportunity my parents never had so I HAVE to make the most of it, I NEED to do more. That + FOMO = a very busy ninja!

I also want to say we have SO MUCH CHOICE. IT'S TOO MUCH. Sometimes I wonder if it would be easier if i was born to a farmer in a little house and he taught me how to farm and I taught my kids how to farm and we were all a big happy family living on a farm.

Being ‘on’ and connected all the time can definitely take a lot out of us. How do you know when you’re overloading yourself with commitments?
- Feeling overwhelmed
- Losing interestsin things
- Losing motivation
- Not having any time to chill out
- Not seeing family often
- Feeling stressed
- Losing sleep
- Unable or finding it hard to eat
- Only having commitments on your mind

When I make to-do lists, I always write a few self-care things on it.My entire life can be described in one sentence: It didn't go as planned and that's okay. ツ

@Stealth_ninja exactly! Also thats an interesting analogy, but yes it does feel like that, until you run out of fires to put out and then you don't know what to do with yourself

Well, @Craycray17 4 of those meetings I just need to attend and do nothing else. The other 2 I am very passionate about. But I also know my warning signs when things are getting a bit too much and tend to take my foot of the pedal, so to speak. It is all about good time management and taking care of myself. Like right now, I have a few assessments due, so I'm not really doing much with another place I volunteer at.

Why do you think it’s so common for young people to overcommit?
Because we want to

Burn out is a very real thing, I think on top of all our jobs, voluntary roles, uni, we also want to have time for friends and family. To have fun, wind down. So that adds to it too. Even if we arent always busy sometimes juggling multiple commitments on one weekend can be stressful
Which brings me to Question 2!
2. Why do you think it’s so common for young people to overcommit?

Is juggling several commitments and responsibilities at once something you have to deal with? Or do you know someone that does?
Well, i moderate this forum, so that's several commitments in and of itself! Most of my workmates at ReachOut are in a similar boat, the place is always very very busy. On top of that I'm doing three Certificate IV's at the same time.
I think most of the people i know are in a similar boat. They're holding down a job and doing a bit of study. Some of them have also been dealing with some pretty decent mental illness, recovering from or learning to manage that is a very big commitment in and of itself.

Hey everyone!! Super pumped to be joining @Stealth_ninja in facilitating tonight's session
Is juggling several commitments and responsibilities at once something you have to deal with? Or do you know someone that does?
Omg yes, although since I've finished study for this year it feels like I've gone from 100 to 0 overnight and I'm still coming to terms with that. But I was like that for years, always had to be on the go and have something to do or work on. Plus having friends around you with similar fast-paced lives tends to reinforce that habit
