You know, that actually makes sense @safari93. Like having a trait which they admire but wouldn't want personally.

I suppose in a way, superpowers create more grandeur in their heroic acts @FootyFan26.

Anyway, goodnight all and thanks for the chat!

Do you think superheroes necessarily need super powers to be superheroes? If not, why do you think they're called superheroes?

Nope. Look at Batman. He just has money haha. I think maybe they're called superheroes because they help people as a major part of their life and they actively try to do so at every opportunity. To me, anyone who does that is a superhero already!

@RevzZ that's an interesting question! Maybe there's overlap, but perhaps you could admire someone and not consider them a superhero, maybe because the thing you admire about them isn't something which is personally impactful for you?

Well I always differentiated superheroes and heroes that way - a superhero was basically a hero but with superpowers. But I guess sometimes we might call someone else a superhero, especially if it seems like they go above and beyond to help someone or do some good for people

I feel like superheroes are made to show the characteristics of a hero in a more widespread way so that more people can see. Heroes are the real people with no superpowers that demonstrate those characteristics.

@RevzZ omg I know someone like that too!! She has so much energy and crams so much into every day, sometimes I get tired listening to her talk about it! But she's so dynamic and up for a challenge, it's really admirable

Hmm...that gets me thinking if there's a difference between those you admire and those you see as superheroes? Or perhaps they're simply the same things?

Is there someone in your life who is like a superhero to you?

There are a few really good friends and family members of mine who've taught me to be more open emotionally and not pretend like I don't have feelings. They seem like superheroes to me since I've always known them to be sensitive and emotionally intelligent

Yep, @safari93, even more so when you're having a tough time simultaneously.

Is there someone in your life who is like a superhero to you?
A friend actually. I have no idea how she gets through so much in a single day and every day, she's busy to the max. I've personally called her Wonder Woman at times because of it haha XD

At first the answer was not really but after discussing these things I'd say yes.  There are a couple of people who have tried their best to help me and been very persistent with that as well which I'm grateful for.

Wow well done @RevzZ! I think the being silly thing is helpful sometimes! I also like how you pointed out the bravery aspect - it is really hard sometimes to support someone going through a tough time, especially when you're not sure about what to say, but just making that effort to say something at least can be a huge thing for the person receiving it

@FootyFan26 I agree! Plus it would probably be useful for a superhero to be loyal and reliable, otherwise nobody would ever trust them to save anything

@safari93 It's also nice when they show the weaknesses of superheroes most of all, so that we can connect with them better rather than them feeling like perfect unreachable beings.

@FootyFan26 we've only really talked about two superheroes (maybe three if you count Kim Possible) but I've noticed that one trait they have in common is that they're generally dependable and reliable people, at least with their hero antics

originally posted on 26-06-2017 9:14 PM

I feel like Batman is very loyal as well so I guess there is a pattern in this small sample, I reckon a lot of others have these traits as well.

I guess it's good that characters seen on TV and in movies represent positive traits 🙂

1. Do you have a favourite superhero?

The Flash

2. What are some characteristics of your favourite superhero? Do you have any in common with them?

Brave, quick-thinking, loyalty, being really reeeaaaalllllyyyy fast, strong sense of justice, a set mindset which makes it impossible to talk him out of it once his mind is set. Plus being really silly at times

3. Which characteristic would you want most from your superhero? How do you think it would help you?

Being able to have a set mindset, though perhaps not to the same degree. Change is nice after all though I reckon not changing my mind whenever there's so much as a breeze would be absolutely great. I'm certainly a bit indecisive (and quite oftenly so) which means it would be extremely helpful to have this.

4. Have you ever used the characteristics you admire  in your favourite superhero to support others?  If not, how could you use them to support someone?

Well...being silly to cheer someone else up counts, right? I think bravery is a really important factor when supporting someone else. If you don't take that first step into the unknown, what if no one does? I'd also sometimes think "What would blah blah do?" and give it a try to see if it works. If it does, I do it more often until it just becomes something I do, rather than them.

I don't know if I've ever used Sailor Moon's particular brand of resilience to support someone, but I try to show that it's okay to be more emotionally expressive and that crying doesn't make you weak in any way. I definitely used to think that way, but now I find that since I've started being more open about my feelings, my friends seem to come to me for support more often
