What to do when bored

Hi all!

At my work i do get a decent amount of downtime and just want a few easy ideas of things you do to keep yourself entertained.

At the moment i play basic games like solitare, crosswords, sudoku. I also play wordle and all the other NY times games. I read when i can. I am thinking of doing some math games or quizzes to refresh my learning. I've taught myself how to use excel.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated!

Hi @sunnygirl606

I would suggest the following:

  • LinkedIn Learning or Online Courses: If you are in the mood to be a little productive, checking out some short courses can be a good way to pass the time. Some of them even give you certificates that you can add to your resume, which is a nice bonus.
  • Journaling or Writing: Whether it is just jotting down random thoughts, keeping a gratitude journal, or writing short stories or poems, it can be a good way to fill the time. No pressure to make it perfect - just whatever feels right in the moment.
  • Doodling or Sketching: Even if you are not an artist, just having a notebook to doodle in can be a fun and mindless way to pass the time. It does not have to be anything fancy, just something to keep your hands busy.
  • Podcasts or Audiobooks: If you are allowed to listen to something while working, a good podcast or audiobook can make time go by way faster. You can go for something educational or just something entertaining, whatever works for you.
  • Tidying Up: If things are slow, organising your desk or sorting through digital files can be weirdly satisfying. Plus, it makes things feel a little more manageable when work picks up again.

Hope these help!

Hi @sunnygirl606,

Something I enjoy doing in my downtime is reading. I'm wondering if perhaps it would be an option to bring a favourite book into work?

Otherwise, I also enjoy puzzle games, so think the suggestion of Sudoku you made is awesome! Plus, I think the language learning option made by @MagsMae would be cool to try out.

Please keep us updated on how things go for you! 😊

Hi @SteadySteps my grandma has recently given me her kindle so being able to sneakily read is much easier for me now!

Hi @sunnygirl606

Do you like craft?

I'm going to take up paper mache as a hobby soon, and plan to make paper mache sea creatures. I've looked up a bunch of tutorials on tiktok and youtube about how to make some basic paper mache things and am really excited 😇

Hi! I used to get some downtime in my previous internship so I also had to find stuff to do to keep myself entertained and awake. Most people already said what I typically did too so I'll just add one more which was making random presentations on Canva 😆 I love Canva's templates and I like to mess around with them a lot. I think one of the presentations I made was about my favourite fictional characters 😅 I wrote down their info, which novel/show/game they're from, and why I like them. But you can absolutely do presentations about literally anything, like your interests, hobbies, etc!

Hello! I also have a lot of downtime and play some of the same games like wordle and math games! If you're a big fan or wordle like me, a thing I would suggest are variants of wordle such as Worldle, Tradle, Nerdle, Globle, Waffle etc. I think they're pretty fun and they refresh daily like wordle. Another thing is escape room mobile games that uses some brain power, or just puzzle games like Storyteller and Peek a Phone!

Hey there! 😊

It sounds like you’ve already got a great mix of activities! Here are a few other suggestions that might be fun or help you learn something new:

  • Language learning. I think this has already been said, but I have been doing duolingo for a few months and love it! It’s such a good activity for your learning and brain health! I have been loving learning Italian!
  • I love doing something creative, such as drawing, painting, or using a colouring book, depending on how much you like art of course!
  • Creating writing or journaling can be an awesome mindfulness activity.
  • Maybe you could create a vision board?

Just a few ideas, good luck!

When I've got too much time on my hands I like to teach myself new skills and hobbies because I find the learning process really fun. I've gotten into fibre arts over the past few years and have taught myself how to knit and crochet - and the best part is that you can just put the project down and pick it up again whenever you have more spare time (and projects can be nice and small to fit into a bag). And weirdly I used to hate the idea of coding but I've really gotten into website building on the site neocities, it's a surprisingly easy process to start with an empty website and learn how to add cool things bit by bit. And totally second @Sky_Stegosaurus 's suggestions, especially duolingo I love learning little bits of languages when I get bored.

Hello,

I understand the workplace boredom aspect, as I too have been in various situations with too much time on my hands after having done all the work. 😁

I suggest:

  • Duolingo
    • Learning a new language helps keep the brain stretchy, even if the commitment towards it isn't 100%, it's better to refine these skills in the meantime consistently.
    • Fun graphics, and exciting UI and it sort of operates like a video game.
  • KhanAcademy app
    • This is more geared towards learning and keeping the brain fresh, it has videos and reading content.
    • It's not a game, but I do use it from time to time just to refresh my chemistry, and physics skills as my degree uses neither of these fields but I do enjoy learning.
  • Euclidea
    • This is a geometry-based math game and it's sort of beyond my expertise and interests, however, if learning is your goal, this can be a great stepping stone.

I do have plenty of other mobile games that are not learning/math-related, feel free to let me know a little more about your interests.
