iPhones
Hi everyone, I thought I'd just share how I feel about this topic, because phones have become a super common thing in our lives today, and I also wanted to know what you guys thought about it.
So pretty much everyone in my year has a mobile phone, and I am one of the very few who don't have one. I have a iPhone 5, and it is TINY so of course, when everyone brings out their 13's and 14's, I get teased because of my itty-bitty 5. I feel insecure whenever people bring up phones, and I wish my parents could buy me one, but we are currently doing renovations on the house, so...
I am thinking about buying my own, but they're really expensive, and I'm not exactly rich when it comes to pocket money (I have about $200 but I'm not that far along to getting a phone when you think about it). I do have a babysitting service, but I live in a small town in regional NSW, so I only get a couple jobs a month. I know I should probably get a more reliable job, but I don't know any jobs that would interest me, and like I said, I live in a small town, so there aren't as many options as I'd like there to be.
I also find it dumb that kids younger than me have iPhone 14's, when I barely have a proper one. That's crazy! I realise the whole world now is kind of ridiculous, with six year olds on Tik-Tok, 12 year olds owning professional gaming PC's and consoles and as I have mentioned before, kids owning phones they can't even hold in their tiny hands.
This has just been on my mind for a while now, so I thought I'd get it out into the crazy world that we live in.
Can't wait to hear what you guys think of this!!
**ALSO** If you have a favourite topic (Disney princesses, Star Wars, the Simpsons etc. etc.) I'd love to hear you guys vote on one to do for a Who Am I game coming up SOON!!

I can understund where you are coming from! It can be very frustrating when people tease and make fun of you just because you dont have the newest tech. I had a similar experience when i was in highschool. I now have an iphone 13 but when i was in highschool i always had my parents phones that were handed down to me and they were always at least 3-4 models below everyone elses. Just an idea, would your parents consider putting you on a phone plan? so you could pay for it monthly, even if you didnt get the newest one but could upgrade to one that is slightly more recent. For me i had to wait it out until after highscool which was frustrating but in the end i did not see the big difference between the phones haha. Its funny how other peoples opinions can make us want something that we might not have even wanted to start with. Also i agree with you, th younger generation has access to technology that is well beyond their years!
Let me know if you have any questions, always here to listen 😀
Hi @Midnight_Squirrel ❤️
Thank you for sharing with us your thoughts. Technology has moved to being such a big part of our daily lives now that it can be really strange when you take a second to step back and look at what everyone is doing. I’m sorry to hear that you have been feeling insecure about your phone and I can sense some frustration which is totally understandable as you have made some really good points.
If it makes any difference, I actually know a lot of people who dislike big phones and prefer smaller phones that are more convenient to carry around and hold, so the sizing of your device doesn’t have to only be a negative thing. Phone’s getting bigger and bigger can be kind of ridiculous sometimes 😅. I also feel like apple's older generations are more built to last and that the newer phones are built to be replaced after a years worth of use.
I hope you are doing well and that you have a fantastic weekend ❤️
Hey @Midnight_Squirrel I'm so curious to know more about the "Who Am I" game. When/where is this happening!? 😄 sounds fun.
Also, just a little message to let you know that we edited your name out of your post as one of the community guidelines is about staying anonymous on the forum for safety reasons. If you have any questions at all, please let us know 😌
Hi Bre-RO,
I plan to do the Who Am I game as soon as I finish assignments and aren't as busy as I am right now! 😅😰😅
Thank you for editing out my name, I have read the community guidelines so I should know not to put my name in! 🙄🙄 I really appreciate it thou
Hi there, your story reminds me of my highschool experience with my old phone.
So I've always been a samsung user. I like it and also because an iphone is really expansive. Plus, I don't really really trust myself in taking care of it since I am pretty clumsy.
I used to use a decent smasung phone that was gifted to me. Unfortunately, due to my clumsiness, I accidently dropped my phone. It dropped in a way that it did a bounce and slid across hitting against the wall. I still remember the day clearly. I was in a rush and was holding alot of things in my hands- including my phone.
When I turned on my phone again there was only a green line running across it but the after afew hours the whole screen blacked out. Repairing it whoul dhave costed another $2-300.00 and so we decided that I could use a temporary phone until the next phone (which would be bought by my parents since I wasn't working).
I felt so guilty...and bad for my broken phone and so I was okay with using a temporray phone. It was a really old model of an android phone. I don't even remember which type of phone it was but it was those small cheap phones that was for normal calls and messages. I remember how sometimes it would even freeze if I was using any app..😄
I get what you mean about being insecure about your phone because the people around you have the latest phones. It was something that I was insecure of as well-especilly during exams.
During our we would have to put our phones in the front of the classroom near the teacher's desk. It would be a bit embarrasing for me to put my phone since it would be the only old fashioned granny type phone...
Now when I look back, it makes me feel that I was too focused on an unimportant detail. I understand we all have this desire to fit in avoid being the odd one out, but don't let it get to you too much.
The world has become really materialistic and I do agree on your comment about youger people having iphones. It does make you stop and think about how things are changing. And it's scary because a kid with an iphone and access to platforms such as TikTok means that their psychological development could be significantly be impacted.
I agree with @Chloe-RO's advise about online jobs and buying your own phone. If you are thinking of buying a new phone then that is surely one good reasonable way. You can save up money and get work experience at the same time.
Take care and remember not to let it get to you too much. The model of your phone does not define who you are...
The model of your phone does not define who you are....
I really love that, and it is soo true too!
Thank you for sharing your experiences, it makes a lot of difference knowing that there are people out there going through similar things. It means a lot to me, so thank you 💖💖
HI @Midnight_Squirrel ,
Some very valid points there. I hear you when you say younger kids having the latest phone as well as the social media access to match. It's certainly true in many places.
I also read that you wish you had a more up to date phone, and that people tease you about your iPhone 5. In a way, Apple doesn't really stock the 'old stuff' which means people are encouraged to buy the latest. Even for people who want to get a new battery for an iPhone 5, it is getting increasingly difficult. Who knows? You may be a rare one who has one of the fewest iphone 5's left in the world! I know there was a recent research looking into the old ipods etc, and people paying big bucks for them!
Anyway, on a more serious note, I read that you would like to be able to work to purchase your own phone, however, you live in a small regional town. With technology advancing so far (as you've mentioned), maybe there is some online work you are able to do? I'm not sure of your interests, but there is definitely work that is done solely online e.g. design, market research etc.
Put it this way: the day you, yourself, purchase your own phone, using your own hard-earnt money, is the moment that you realise you are feeling something that the younger ones who are 'handed' a new phone will never feel.
I currently have an iPhone 11 but I also have an iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 is still a good iPhone. I am here if you ever need someone to message.
