Why do bad things happen?

Just thought I might check in to see how everyones feeling given the recent events. For those that don't know, a guy in melbourne went on a rampage yesterday in the CBD and lots of people were hurt 😞 It was pretty scary. I've just moved to melbourne but I was at home. How is everyone now? I just feel like it could've been any of us, it was just so random and unnecessary.

Also, Donald Trump just became the 45th president of the United States so. That happened.

Bad things will always happen. I wish we could change that but i am not sure it's possible. You can only try and put good things in the world. That's what i'm going to try and do anyway.

A lot of bad things happen just because there are things that people have no control over. A lot of people think that if they can control every aspect of their life, they can stay safe forever, but the one thing about life is that you can never predict what is going to happen--there is always going to be a weak spot, per se, and I think part of growing up and being healthy is recognising that and understanding that it is possible to move on and feel happy and fulfilled despite that.

That being said, there are lots of things that CAN be changed to reduce the amount of bad things happening and drastically lower their frequency. Factors such as high levels of poverty and low levels of education will inevitably increase the probability of violence and instability. Funding for public education and housing, availibility of fresh food/water...when the basic needs of people are not met, they will lash out and act recklessly because they have nothing left to lose. It is only by treating populations with compassion and care that they will feel human again and have space to breathe and feel better.

Unfortunately the government and the media love to demonise and criminalise marginalised people--immigrants, refugees, homeless populations etc. -- and I would say that definitely contributes to a culture where the peopel who need help most are systematically denied that help. However, this is something we have the power to change. I'm not saying it's easy but these sorts of bad things, unlike natural disasters like tsunamis, are something we can exert some control over and strive to change for the better and that does leave me with a lot of determination.

@Ben-RO I don't think bad things will just stop happening. It goes pretty deep, I mean we can lower the rate of bad things happening but it'll never be abolished completley.

Thanks for sharing that @j95 that was beautiful ❤️

Yeah i agree, you can't control what other people do or stop bad things from happening, you can only try and put good things in the world. That's what i'm going to try and do anyway.

Self-care is also really important, @khaleesi_18 I was a bit shook because I had a few six degrees of separation moments where i knew someone who knew someone that was close by or like was in a car near him before. It just could have been anyone, but amazing to know you're all safe and I'm definitely going to keep putting love and positivity in the world. I think there are a lot of people hurting and maybe that's why they do bad things.

Someone who is studying law told me something worth mentioning.... innocent until proven guilty... so unfortunately sometimes a wrong decision is made and it sucks heaps!! There's too much hatred in the world and we need more love.. or should I say more people showing love Heart

Thanks for starting this thread @Stealth_ninja! Glad to hear you're safe - I was home too, but it's scary to think about as I go to Bourke St all the time.

I'd just like to stress the importance of self care (it's certainly been a shitty couple of days, world event wise). It's okay to turn off the news and go and do whatever self care looks like to you to take a break if everything feels a bit overwhelming.

It's just so awful. I saw an incredible post on Facebook today including a photo, made by "Humans of Melbourne" and I thought I would share it with you all.

"As I write this I am sitting on the steps of GPO with tears in my eyes and I feel a lot of things... afraid is not one of them.
I feel beyond sad for those who lost loved ones yesterday. I can feel our collective hearts are broken and it fills me with sorrow.
I feel pride for those Melburnians who yesterday came to the aid of complete strangers in there time of need and put themselves in harms way to try and save their lives. And for the two boys who tried to stop the driver outside of Flinders street with baseball bats... you're heroes in my book.
I am so thankful to the paramedics and ambos and doctors and nurses who worked to save people's lives for hours on end.
I feel thankful to the police who day after day put themselves in harms way. They are always faced with tough choices and I could never do there job and yesterday must of been amongst their toughest...
Most of all I feel heartbroken for four gorgeous Humans who were taken far, far too early... absolutely heartbroken.
At a time like now it is easy to be angry and look for someone to blame, but really, there is only one person to blame. I hope we can all remember that.
So I sit here as people start to drop flowers off with tears flowing freely down their face and I refuse to let this define our city and I certainly refuse to be afraid.
We are not defined by the actions of one man but by the actions of the many Humans who showed our city's true colours yesterday. We don't get to choose when tragedy comes into our lives, we only get to choose how we react when it does.
So let's care for those who need it so much right now and look after one another. If you see someone struggling today give them a hug and let them know it's going to be ok.
We will be ok.

Melbourne, I love you"

That was really sad, I was driving towards the outer part of the city and I heard it on the radio.

And I'm going to sound like someone everyone wants to yell at...... Who cares about the US president........ I highly doubt the world will end from this

Bad things will always happen. I wish we could change that but i am not sure it's possible. It's really easy to break things, it's much harder to build things.

I think we can reduce the impact and the frequency of bad things though. I have some ideas on things we could all be doing to help with that, but i'd love to hear other people's thoughts 😛

What can we do to stop bad things happening?

Welcome back!
