Always Remember To Be Kind To Yourself

Hi all,

This is my first post, so I wanted to discuss an issue that is very personal to me.

As a student, I often find my self-worth becoming inextricably tied with my ability to work hard. On days when I complete all my tasks, I feel proud and worthy, but when I fail to do so, I start to experience concerns of not being enough. On these bad days, I begin to worry that I lack willpower, drive, and grit. However, since, I have been a student for a while now, I have become better at combatting these thoughts and reorienting my outlook.

First, I found that feelings of low motivation are often linked to burnout and should be taken as a sign to take a break and is, therefore, not a reflection of your ability to work hard but rather an indicator of whether you prioritise rest.

Second, I try to reflect on whether my to-do list is realistic, as I believe many of us hold ourselves to incredibly high standards which can backfire at times.

Third, I remind myself that I am more than my ability to work. I often like to reflect on my connections to people and the value I bring to those relationships.

So, if anyone has gone through or is going through, I hope you feel a little less alone and more supported.

Warmly,

Sprouting_Flowers

Thank you for this @Sprouting_Flowers

I feel like I experience the same, and it isn't acknowledged enough in terms of burnout and break-taking, realistic SMART goals, and self-worth. I feel as though the culture I am surrounded by at university is very 'study, study, study' and not so 'self-care' at certain times in the semester.

Hi @Green_Ghost

Unfortunately, burnout has become incredibly normalised so I hope you are taking care of yourself while at uni!

Hi @Sprouting_Flowers

Thank you for this post! It's so important to look after yourself and not put too much pressure on yourself to succeed.

I can resonate with a lot of points you highlighted in this post. The most important thing to do is to practice self-care, talk to others about how you feel and to reward yourself always! Even if you think you didn't do as good as you wanted to, it's okay because the main thing is you did it and you can grow from that

Yess I can't agree more @Blueberry_Kudu - the way we talk, treat and think about ourselves can have HUGE impacts! Thank you for sharing!! :))

Hi @Sprouting_Flowers

Thank you so much for this post! Nowadays there are so many expectations, either the ones we have for ourselves or the ones that others have for us. So, it is really important not to be too hard on ourselves and practice self care. The points you have mentioned are all really amazing, I also wanted to add on by saying that it is super important to treat yourself and celebrate your wins every now and then. We tend to beat ourselves up a lot and forget to appreciate our successes however small. You can celebrate yourself or treat yourself by watching your favourite movie, going out to get your nails done, having your favourite meal etc.
