It sounds like you did have a decent social circle back home, please don't feel that you have to be "close" to every person in your life, you can have different levels of friendship. I'm really glad that you have that one person that is your confidant, and please don't beat yourself up that you're not any form of extrovert - I find that they are very exhausting to be around! 😀
Are there any study groups that you can join through your uni classes? I find those are easier because you already have common ground with other people in that you're studying the same thing. It's also easier to talk because you're discussing the subject matter, and not having to get into much personal stuff that may make you feel awkward. In my experience, international students can often feel lonely and isolated as well, so they are in a similar situation to yourself and may be a little easier to say hi to if you share a class with them.
Do you have student counselling or disability resource services at your uni? They may have info about what's on offer on campus that can be support options for you. Keep us posted as to how it's going for you.
