Weekly Wellbeing: Role Models in our Lives
Role Models
There are many people around us who influence our thoughts and actions. Often they don't mean to do this, and sometimes we don't realise until we really pay close attention! It may be something very simple like smiling when they see us, or paying for a coffee at uni.
We also have the potential to be a role model towards other people. All of us have unique qualities which make us who we are, and there are ways in which we can show a positive example to our families, friends, peers and colleagues.
I'd love to invite the community to share their experiences about someone who, through their actions and words, has been someone who we look up to. It's also important to look inside ourselves at how we can shape and influence others in a positive way.

Ah, this is such a great activity @mrmusic!
Who is a role model in your life? What have they done that has made a positive difference in your or someone else's life?
My dad is easily a role model in my life. His ability to face adversity head on, love unconditionally and always look out for the needs of those around him are qualities I admire greatly. While he isn't here anymore, these are qualities that I constantly try and embody.
Another role model of mine is a lady I met while on a uni trip overseas. At the time, she was an Australian living in the US leading a social enterprise. I admired her ability to apply her skills and passions to a meaningful cause and also be proud and comfortable of exactly the person she is.
What are some qualities in yourself that can make you a role model for others?
Similar to @lennycat2017, I believe my resilience is a quality that could make me a role model.
Hi everyone, I really love the responses so far! 🙂
Who is a role model in your life? What have they done that has made a positive difference in your or someone else's life?
A very important role model in my life was one of my primary school teachers. She was a very caring lady, and treated everyone with kindness, even when we were being completely feral! She showed so much love to all of her students, and she was one of the most well-loved teachers in the school. For me personally, she was really understanding of my social and learning difficulties, and was so accommodating. Unfortunately she passed away a few years ago, but the memories will last a lifetime.
What are some qualities in yourself that can make you a role model for others?
I'm a firm believer in leading by example, so I try my best in everything I do, and I try to be there for others unconditionally. I acknowledge my mistakes, ask for forgiveness, and do my best to make people around me feel loved and cared for.
I also had to include this meme, even though it's Wednesday 😛
Who is a role model in your life? What have they done that has made a positive difference in your or someone else's life?
My close friend is my role model - she is a huge advocate for aboriginal people and juggles being a new mum/studying her masters/taking care of herself with exercise and clean eating. She always encourages me to chase my dreams and often invites me to things to get me more motivated/active in the community.
What are some qualities in yourself that can make you a role model for others?
I think my best quality that could make me a role model is my resilience - it can show other people that despite challenges in life there is always a way to overcome it
Great weekly wellbeing activity @mrmusic ! Good role models are definitely what we need in our lives, especially when we're younger and still learning.
Who is a role model in your life? What have they done that has made a positive difference in your or someone else's life?
One of my role models in my life is my mum too! She's always been there for me throughout my life even though she works a full-time job and then comes home to do the cooking and other housework. She's taught me a lot about having manners and standing up for oneself, as well as having a healthy diet and working hard.
Another one of my role models, someone that I look up to and am inspired by, is the season 3 masterchef usa contestant, Christine Ha, who despite being completely blind, was able to power through the competition and win. From her performance in the competition without even being able to see, she has definitely shown me that you can achieve anything as long as you're passionate about it and work hard towards achieving it.
What are some qualities in yourself that can make you a role model for others?
I suppose trying to do my best in things I am passionate about is a quality that could make me a role model for others. Being kind and caring is also a good quality too!
What a awesome activity!!!!
Role modelling means so much to me, I had some pretty challenging experiences in my life and didn't always have the most understanding role models and the ones that I did have I have lost. So I am really focused on being role models for people so they don't have to feel what I felt.
Who is a role model in your life? What have they done that has made a positive difference in your or someone else's life? I would say my step-mum was a great role model growing up. She came into my life when things were really difficult and although she was hard lady to deal with at times, she always supported me and went into battle for me. I have taken that on board and make sure that people always know I've got their back!!
What are some qualities in yourself that can make you a role model for others?
I know what it is like to have people give up on you, so I pride myself on being there for people. I always try to be empathetic and see the capacity for change which I think is a good quality in a role model.
What a lovely idea for an activity. I can second how much of an impact good role models can make in our lives. They can be our family, friends or even a public figure we look up to.
Who is a role model in your life? What have they done that has made a positive difference in your or someone else's life?
My ultimate role model is my mum. Ever since I can remember she has tried to teach me about the importance of kindness to others and to myself. She role models positive behaviours such as meditating daily, eating well and helping others. I can safely say I wouldn't be so passionate about mental health if it wasn't for her.
Another role model of mine is a good friend who is a successful comic. She taught me how important humour is. Ever since I met her she has role modelled how to not take life too seriously and laugh at how overwhelming it can be.
What are some qualities in yourself that can make you a role model for others?
I try to be a good role model to my younger family members. I do this simply by loving them unconditionally with the hopes that they will go on to be loving and kind people to others.
Would love to see your responses to this activity too @mrmusic
