Yeah I think I was very lucky formal wise @lanejane!

I always thought I would look back at them and hate the way I looked, but I actually still quite like it!

I remember it well @Billy-RO!

You were not alone!

Does anyone remember how scary it was to actually ask someone to be your date? Or was that just me?

@Billy-RO Didn't ask anyone but someone asked me! I can see how nerve-wracking it was for him at the time. There were people in my grade that went all out (i.e. wrote songs) to ask dates out whereas others had some not-ok manoeuvers...

Wow, writing songs is cool @Myvo!

I asked my year 10 date out via text (looking back now that's pretty lame) and my year 12 date was one of my closest friends, and he was helping me deal with my recent break up, so I knew he would say yes 🙂

Going to the formal is not for everyone. What are other ways to celebrate the end of Year 12?

We always had an after party which every one enjoyed more than the actual formal! Lots of different friendship groups also had small get-togethers (brekkies, lunches, dinners, sleepovers, etc) as a way to kind of finish off the year and part our ways, which was nice.

After party is a good way to celebrate @florenceforever - i think a few people do miss the formal but go and hang out with their friends afterwards. it's a bit more low key for those who want to escape the "school" type atmosphere (cos teachets etc usually attend the formal)

Lots of people I know actually used schoolies to celebrate the end of year 12 instead of the formal. This was easier for them because it was done after exams were over and didn't require as much planning of dates, dress codes etc.

One way would be to eat an entire pizza while watching Game of Thrones at home, but I wouldn't suggest that for everyone. I personally enjoyed my formal a lot but it's not the only opportunity to spend time with all your friends ! There is things like schoolies, and you can always do something chill with a smaller group of friends later on like go out for drinks or dinner!

Hey @benjamin_ ! Welcome to our chat!

But...pizza and Game of Thrones go hand-in-hand like kindred spirits! It would still be an awesome way to celebrate Yr 12!

@Myvo Pizza and Game of Thrones are a way of life in general, but I agree that it's definitely a great way to celebrate Year 12. Perhaps you can get really fancy and order stuffed crust and extra garlic bread for the special occasion.

Woah now @benjamin_, don't go crazy!

 @benjamin_

Your idea is PERFECTION. I will probably do that on Thursday night when I have finished exams!

@Billy-RO you are WAY too cool!

@Billy-RO

I didn't actually take a date for my year 10 and 11 formal. only for year 12 - and we were dating already so there was no officially asking process!

sounds like she said yes anyway?

Sounds like a few people really look forward to the formal and enjoyed it, and some just took the night as it came. Pretty interesting stuff!

Okay for next question

Going to the formal is not for everyone. What are other ways to celebrate the end of Year 12?

You know, if I could go back in time, I would've just thrown a Games night with some friends and cooked dinner. Wait, no. I can't do that! That's for adult me! Ok, anyway...In my hometown, it's a tradition for your Year 12 cohort to go to the beach and just run amok along the shore. Wild and free, I say, wild and free! There's also people signing yearbooks and uniform shirts to mark the occasion Smiley Happy

@Myvo the beach thing sounds similar to muck up day in a way. that's another end of year celebration!

How did you ask @Billy-RO?

originally posted on 03-11-2014 8:14 PM

Well, I just bit the bullet and did it. I remember it was in the canteen. I bought her a hot chip roll with gravy to seal the deal haha.

originally posted on 03-11-2014 8:19 PM

Aw good for you @Billy-RO ! I had someone I wanted to ask (And I think he wanted to ask me too!) but we were both too shy!! Missed opportunity. Would definitely go for it if I had my time over again, but the idea of being rejected at 17 was waaaaaay to big a deal hahaha.

One of my dear friends and I had a pamper day to celebrate finishing - went shopping, ate lots of yummy food, got a massage, went for dinner... It was excellent :). Except that I got food poisoning, which was definitely NOT excellent haha! (I am still dubious about eating Indian food to this day haha)
