Last question: How do you look after your physical and mental wellbeing whilst travelling?

Physical: make sure you get enough sleep, make sure you're eating nutritious foods (not just waffles and icecream!), make sure you're drinking lots of safe water

Mental: check in with yourself every once in a while, practice self care (ie reading, meditation, listening to music - whatever works for you), have a day off if you need to, let the people you are travelling with know if you are struggling, call/skype home 🙂

I can never stick to plans. It's SO annoying!

originally posted on 22-06-2015 9:42 PM

@FootyFan26 I know right? I love planning and then I do something else. But planning is a great way to save money. Perhaps with money involved we'd stick to the plan?

originally posted on 22-06-2015 9:44 PM

I guess cause I'm 15 and don't have a job yet I would need to have a job to be able to plan with money. I don't really like shopping anyway and am pretty protective of the money I get.

@florenceforever - My sister and I are 5 years apart (she is older). We've always got along really well, and she kind of looks after me when we travel, as she has done so much travelling, it's just like second nature to her 🙂

What is your number one tip for people who are travelling on a budget?

I would say probably:

1. Cook your own meals, and pack bread, salsa and a cucumber for lunch every day. With the occasional meal out treat (for cultural exploration of course!)

2. Travel overland. Taking local buses and trains can be really cheap, and also is an amazing way to see the countryside.

@redhead going with parents can definitely be a money saver!
@FootyFan26 that's a good one. Buying some things (like Dutch Syrup Waffles @hartley_) are better from a local supermarket or something like that.
@florenceforever public transport! Although be careful about tickets and such.
@Georgie bringing your own meals and such is a good idea. But then not forgetting to try out the local cuisine! 🙂

@N1ghtW1ng - Stroopwafels! They're the best!

originally posted on 22-06-2015 9:44 PM

I feel like I need to try these stroopwaffles people are talking about!

originally posted on 22-06-2015 9:45 PM

I honestly have no clue what stroopwaffles are @florenceforever.

What is your number one tip for people who are travelling on a budget?

I'm not really knowledgable about this stuff but I'd say going local and eating and buying things from small local 'not-touristy' looking shops.

originally posted on 22-06-2015 9:33 PM

Yeah @Georgie I have really bad location skills so I really rely on people helping me find my way around!

originally posted on 22-06-2015 9:29 PM

No. Only family but there's one close friend who I don't see much who I would happily go on a holiday with if his and my family all went together.

originally posted on 22-06-2015 9:27 PM

I don't think I have a preference, probably with someone though, depends on time and where! Context!

originally posted on 22-06-2015 9:31 PM

Who you travel with definitely depends on context @OrangeOliver!

Looking forward to seeing answers for this one!

What is your number one tip for people who are travelling on a budget?

To travel on a budget...
1- if you know you are an overspender, see how much you usually overspend by. Then, next time you travel, lower your budget by that much and a little bit more, so when you overspend, you end up at your usual budget.
2- set up a predetermined account specifically for travel and have it set at that. If you hit the limit, think about what you want to buy, if it's absolutely essential (i.e food, paying for hotel) then take it out of secondary account. If not, then do you really need it?
3- Write a list on how much you allow yourself for certain things. Souvenirs, food, places, and how much you know (such as the places) cost to work your budget from there. If you've traveled before, use that as a stepping stone to knowing how much you spend on souvenirs and such.

I also realise that it was number one tip... but I'm going to pretend I didn't see it.

I think working on a budget is such a good idea @N1ghtW1ng

There is so much crap I end up buying on holiday - I spend so much money and I never need it/use it when i get back home.

Hello @Georgie! Nice to see you 😄

I think travelling does benefit your health (all kinds) most of the time. There probably are times where it doesn't, I can't think of any, but I'm sure that there are. It would be different for each person too, some people would find travelling difficult and unrewarding so it wouldn't benefit them while others find the escape, and relaxing times and breath of fresh air so to speak.

@redhead I agree, Australia is so diverse too! You've got desert, rainforests, beaches, pretty waterfalls, mountains, even snow! It's pretty darn great 🙂

originally posted on 22-06-2015 9:09 PM

We do live in such a diverse country hey @N1ghtW1ng! We are very spoilt for choice!

Do you think travelling benefits your physical, mental and spiritual health? Why/Why not?

I think it can. It really depends on what you make of it. I would actually love to on a really physically intense travelling trip - as a fun way to get fitter and see the world!

I think it can do wonders for your mental health - but it can also be difficult traveling and so it's important that you look after your mental wellbeing

For a lot of my friends, traveling has really helped with their spiritual health. However, I haven't really experienced this.

I'm not sure how I feel about this question. During travel, I walked like 20kms a day, often with a pack, so physically that was really good, but I also ate and drank more bad food and drinks than what would be healthy, cause I was on holidays, so unsure..
Mentally, great to unwind, but also pressures of being alone in a foreign land can be draining, and spending excessive time with the same people can also turn sour
