Hearing other people's goals and resolutions always gives me ideas too! I'm not the competitive type to try and outdo others, but some of my friends have some awesome dreams and goals that only serve to inspire me.

For instance, a friend today told me they were going to Vietnam in February. Now there's a place I'd love to go to- that whole SE Asia rim there. But I have family who want to go to Japan and Europe too!

But reality checks and it might just have to be an Ozzie adventure for us in the meantime.

Hahahaha. That is where my whole flying on a plane for the first time came from. 😛 All the talk about travel.

@verity23 so true, hearing other peoples goals can help inspire us of things we didn't even think of.

Vietnam is a beautiful place, i just spent five weeks there 🙂

Oh that's a good coincidence @jvkn . Along that vein, I have started an online scrapbook with my kids, of places we'd like to go. And just to educate them about the world - another goal for this year!

And you can bet they've added pics of super dooper exciting toys they want to try out.. Cat LOL

People have all different goals - some big, some small. Unfortunately, this can come into play with comparing your achievements with others. What is your view on New Year's resolutions and setting goals?

I'm a little conflicted about new years resolutions, I sometimes feel like if something is worth doing you shouldn't have to really wait for an excuse to do it, but at the same time it is a great opportunity to take some time and reflect on your achievements of the past and what you would like to focus on in the future!

originally posted on 12-01-2015 9:25 PM

@FItzChivalry Definitely agree! I also feel conflicted because why not achieve all the things you can? But then, that's not the point - it's about the journey (so cheesy, I know - but still rings true!)

@stonepixie Impressing people is so baloney, especially if it's people you don't even like or don't know very well!

Looks like everyone's got a hand on how they'd like to tackle their goals and resolutions!

Here's some interesting stats while we're at it:

80% of resolutions fail within 3 months and 35% have already failed by the end of January. The main reason (35%) these fail is because the goal is unrealistic, while the second most common reason is that people don't keep track of their goals.

@Myvo Wasn't there a statistic floating around in the literature somewhere, that New year's resolutions made on , well, New year's day...that by the 17th of January, 85% of those resolutions were broken!?!?! Smiley Mad

What do you think of that @jvkn ? I'm sure you or the other Mods on RO wouldn't subscribe to such a fatalistic proposition to start the new year, right?

@verity23 the 85% probably made unrealistic goals, hopefully we’re all the 15% that have made realistic goals and taking the small steps to achieving them.

From what you guys have said tonight with how you will break down the goals into smaller ones, i have high hopes most of our goals will be met 🙂

@verity23 I think a lot of people set highly unrealistic expecations on themselves for new year's resolutions. People like to let their imagionation run wild a little bit this time of year, but then when it comes to the hard work of making it a reality they realise it might not really be worth it in the end. Not neccessarily a bad thing, simply realizing what is actually important enough for you to put in the effort to achieve I think.  🙂

I rarely make goals, very very rarely only at new years or when I decided its a good idea (like that time I made a big post about my goals on here, they are yet to be acheived)

@verity23 Oh man, not entirely sure about that stat! Hope it's not true through! Maybe it could be that since everyone's swept up in celebration, they're probably thinking: Hm, I'll start again tomorrow. Hahaha~

Here's our next question:

Do you have anything on your bucket list that you would like to cross off in 2015?

I have a few cocktails on my bucket list, I might cross them off. Just can't seem to find my bucket list. I think it might still be on my old computer. 😞

Thanks, I'm sure anything is better than where I currently am, can you guys recommend things to do or places to stay or go. Would be appreciated 🙂

What advice would you give to a friend, family member, or co-worker who wants to reach their resolution?

Probably: break it down into smaller goals to help you manage it, and don't overwhelm yourself with lots of goals, just focus on one or two at a time.

Ditto what @delicatedreamer said. Took the words right out of my mouth, or in this case, fingers. Hahaha. 😉 😛

Find a group that shares common interests about your goal. Peer support helps 🙂
