how do you remain self-motivated when you encounter setbacks?

Tough question. I guess it all comes down to listening to what your body is trying to tell you and not being disencouraged if it is what you really want.

I guess when I encounter a setback, I take a break and then evaluate what I can do about this setback. So it's kind of like working around the obstacle so you can still achieve that goal you had.

@ryvb3 ooh taking a break I like that idea lol haha no really though, we need to take that step back and look at things in a different light.

Guys the next question is:

4. What motivates you most? Is it something internal (ambition) or external (loved ones)?

For me what motivates me most would be internal. And it is my ambition haha. It may not be today but i'll make it some day!

I think it depends on the work. If it is studying, internal motivation is what motivates me the most because at the end of the day what I study is my choosing and not anyone else's.

If I were to think of something external, I would think time and deadlines would be one. Like those due dates for library books and paying bills.

Both motivate me but I think I'm motivated more externally than internally.  I do a lot of things because I want to make my mum proud since she's the only parent I have left.  I sometimes think about what would be best for me but it's pretty rare so I think I should start doing that more.

@FootyFan26 I think you can make your mum proud even if you don't meet her expectations. Through growing into a loving, decent human being that's good to society and you're happy. You're happiness means alot to her!

Would have to say ambition. It's best to take what motivates you into personal stride, rather than doing it for other people or assuming that you're owing your goals to someone else.

My need to help other people! I am so great at doing that but I have no idea how to help myself. I guess most can relate.

Another motivation right now is to finish my course and get the qualification, basically keep the structure in my life that was missing all of last year.

The need to find something really small in my really big but messy room. Hahaha.

Looking at this question again, i must admit a lot of my motivation to study is to do it for my mumma too. I wanna wear that graduation hat for her!

@stonepixie it's really hard to not be discouraged at times but being able to push through will make us grow 🙂

3. how do you remain self-motivated when you encounter setbacks?

I sometimes use those setbacks to prove tht I can do things.  Doing one piecce of homework for me is a big deal.  I also feed off that to find motivation from the feeling after completing the task.

ooo thats tough one.... keen to hear from others on that... i think it would involve challenging negative thinking... through things like self-talk... and then i guess if i was struggling after a set-back, it would be about talking it out with someone... a friend, family member... a kind of pep-talk!

@FootyFan26 That's really great to hear, being able to look at setbacks and even using them as further motivation!

Hmmm how do I stay motivated for longer... Yep trying to cut things down into little steps.... and trying to make sure I only commit to things that I really want to do anyway helps a lot... Focus on the rewards, wins...

Making what I am doing public is a good one - keeping up appearances! And doing things with others so you get bonus socialising!

@Cheeselover85 so you'd say visualisation is important to keeping us going?

hi footyfan i think some of us do work best under pressure so thats ok... the problem is when its not that, but in fact we sabotage ourselves because if we try and do badly that feels worse than if we didn't try and failed, as lease we can say to ourselves on a subconscious level "well i didn't even try so of course.."

originally posted on 03-08-2015 8:12 PM

That's exactly what I do @chandelier. Especially in English when we have timed essays and stuff like that.

I'll happily do my sport homework which is practicing kicking a footy though!
