@lovin each day that's interesting. As I've said before I slept 3 hours a day for 5 days and it had no affect on me. I still had all my energy and would go out boogie boarding and running around.

I also didn't see a difference when I was getting near the end of the 5 days. I was exactly the same as I was beforehand!

Sleep and mental health are definitely interwoven and to have strong mental health we definitely need strong sleep patterns. Gotta take care of ourselves right 🙂

What is one tip you would give someone struggling with sleep?

What is one tip you would give someone struggling with sleep?

  • Try to create a routine for yourself to make sure you've done everything you need to and are in bed at a certain time.
  • Try and cut down on food, alcohol and caffeinated drinks before bed.
  • Try not to exercise before bed because it releases adrenaline which makes you more alert.
  • Try not to look at any bright lights half an hour to an hour before because they give a signal to your brain that there's still light and you should be working.
  • Try meditating ro doing breathing exercises before bed to wind down
  • Block out any extra sound by closing door, using ear plugs etc.

How do you think sleep affects your mental health?

I rekon it has heaps of pros and cons.

Pros (lots of sleep):

- mood
- we get along better with people
- concentration/motivation
- we look better with sleep and as a result feel more confident!
- motor skills and our general wellbeing

Cons (no sleep):

- it makes us like a drunk driver if we get no sleep (i learnt that tonight!)

- it turns j into a zombie

- it makes rue put her deoderant places it does not belong

- it makes us upset

- it can make you stressed and anxious and like you can struggle to cope with stuff

I agree @lanejane

Getting amazing sleep can actually make your whole day positive, nothing brings you down but once you get crappy sleep just one little thing can tip you over the edge.

Relationships are better when everyone is well rested, less fights.

i spend so much time downloading "sleepy songs" when i could actually be sleeping, and i dont end up listening to them anyway cause i just end up with my headphones wrapped around my face so...

@j95 Do those actually work? I tried it once, I ended up switched back to a classical piece and slept off that instead.

They dont work for me cause I just change the song constantly and over think it

How do you think sleep affects your mental health?
I know that when I am especially lacking sleep (compared to normal) I'm even grumpier than normal, even angrier than normal and I see everything in a bad light. If this is a regular thing it could creep in even without the lack of sleep, like become permanent

What are your sleeping rituals you do before you go to bed? If someone said go to bed RIGHT NOW... what would you do?

Clean up room because I can't sleep in an untidy room
Put pyjamas/comfy sleeping clothes on
Brush my teeth
Plug my phone in
Turn on big light and put lamp on
Get into bed
Double check alarm is ready
Look at phone for as little as 5 minutes to an hour (oops, get caught up in doing stuff)
Try and go to sleep

@ruenhonx consciously avoid it?

Both. I really don't know when I'm worse I'm more conscious of it but because I do it so much I get used to avoiding going to bed and it's unconscious. But it's both. Okay I'm getting really confused now!

originally posted on 15-06-2015 9:12 PM

No I get it, makes sense @FootyFan26 really interesting though, I think we all avoid sleep both consciously and unconsciously. Mine is watching shows until there is nothing left to watch.

@lovin each day I'm only in HSC but I would think that a lecture recording would put me to sleep very quickly too!

And might I add that is very hard to do!

@j95 I feel like alcohol before bed is like having too much panadol because if you have it too much it stops working. Do you agree or is it just me?
