How do you think sleep affects your mental health?

I'm going to try not to Google this one!

Lack of sleep affect peoples attention span and focus which could lower grades.

It could also affect our mood and the way we approach situations.  If this becomes common it could ruin relationships with friends and familt.

yep totally true @FootyFan26 i recon it could effect your attention span and effect your grades.

(i cant spell effect. is it effect or affect? maybe if i slept more i would know the answer)

i remember once i was running off 2 1/2 hours sleep and i went to work (when i was doing my sparky apprenticeship) and i pretty much fell as sleep on the job, which is dangerous when you are playing with wires...

One that always worked for me is to find ways to tired myself out. For me personally I take a 1 hour jog around the block, get home, shower and by the time i slips into my cozy bed, I would feel too exhausted to keep my eyelid open. that or WATCH LECTURES! or the the transformers' movie, I've heard people actually fell asleep while watching it in the cinemas....

UMMM

  • Do some exercise during the day to help you be tired later.
  • Dont have caffeine for a few hours before you go to bed.
  • Try and do something that relaxs you before bed. Eg - read a book, stretch, shower... whatever floats your boat.
  • Listen to some light tunes or the sound of whales talking 😛

The worst thing is when you are trying so hard to sleep but the people around you are not... like who knew 3am was a good time for a shower right next to my bedroom wall...? when I'm trying to sleep my senses are heightened so even the tiniest noise feels like its so so loud.

Same @j95.

I think mine are heightened too because of fights and arguments I've heard between my mum and my step-dad and police coming in late at night and wandering around so I always get worried that things are going to happen again and can sometimes nearly start hyperventilating over small bangs or creaks.

@FootyFan26 i totally understand and I'm not going to go into things on here but a lot of stuff like that happened when i was a kid so trying to get to sleep is super tough because I'm always on alert.

Honestly @j95 I just really appreciate knowing that I'm not alone because I don't tell any of my family anything and there's only one teacher at school who I will talk to if I can get myself to which can be hard at times.

@FootyFan26

Mate personal piece of advice, most parents are the best people to talk to about your troubles. The things you went through in school, they probably experienced too. I didnt realize this until my old man started to tell me his school life and I thought, OMG THAT HAPPENED TO ME TOO! I know it sounds scary, but trusting in your parents is probably the safest thing to do. On a good note, GO KICK HSC IN THE BUTT!!

@lovin each day lovin' the enthusiasm but my mum's busy and for reasons I  probably shouldn't say on here it is physically impossible to go to my dad so I just kinda spend all night and all of my school day thinking about it.

Teachers have noticed though and have since sent me to counsellors and have nearly called home.

Geez you're a good writer @lovin each day!

My story's slightly different but I'll have to alter it if I end up putting it up anyway.

Have a nice night anyway and get some sleep!

@FootyFan26

haha should put the topic on another threat, but i will say add this: There was a time for my home when my parents would leave at 5:30 am and return around 7, stay awake for 2 hours and goes straight to bed. I thought its best to keep my troubles inside. Now when i look back I realized that keeping the troubles inside and later surprise my parents with it was worse. So during the weekend, a 30 minute break, make your mum a hot drink, sit her down and talk to her about it. I am pretty sure a lot of the troubles you are facing right now she probably already went through it, and her advice possibly save you hours of brain wrecking in order to solve it.

Anyways, nice to meet you! hope to see you around!

sounds a bit scary @FootyFan26

i wonder if you could write a list of things that calm you down and could help you sleep? that way if you're feeling scared at home you have a quick like "cheat note" as to how you can help yourself calm down and get some sleep (if possible)?

@lanejane I'm not really the organised type. I also spend my time at night think mainly negatively anyway so I don't think it would be easy for me to get into a positive headspace. I just kinda deal with it but then I get really angry at School because I don't want to express my emotions at home and let my Mum know how I'm feeling and how I've been going at School.

This includes getting sent to a counselor and refusing to do work at times which she knows nothing about. Until she gets my report where my teachers will all give me bad comments.

@FootyFan26 i'm glad you've come on RO before bed tonight. maybe our turning negatives into positives thread could help you before you go to bed?

it must be tough 😞

Thanks @lanejane.

I've tried that but can nearly never think of any positives. My last one was:
Neg: Gonna get a bad report
Pos: Gonna beat my record for amount of 0's
