[CHAT]: How do our online lives influence our IRL ones?
Growing up, whenever I asked my mum how to spell a word, she would always tell me to look it up in the dictionary. Eventually, she started asking me about what things were, so I got into the habit of telling her to Google it. Then one day she found this image and shared it on my fb, so I replied that I would just Bing what happened to them.
But then, last night I told my housemate to Google something to which he responded ‘How did we look things up without Internet? ‘ which was followed by a train of thought about spending too much time at the library and how did people manage to do that, well until I reminded him that there was no internet.
This made me realise just how much we rely on the internet these days and kinda got me thinking. There are studies that show that we are less likely to be sure about the things that we remember because we have this device in our hands that allows us to easily look up things. Then there are studies that show that although it is easier to stay in touch with people, we are more lonely. So how else does the internet affect our lives?
It is almost as if for every positive thing about the internet, there is a trade off in our real lives. But it’s not all bad things, is it? I mean now support is readily available and I wouldn’t be a member of this kickarse community if it wasn’t for the internet, which may I add has been one of the very few constant things in my life since being diagnosed with mental health issues.
So join us on Monday the 27th as we discuss the pro’s and con’s of the internet and how it affects our daily lives. Please see image below for roughly what time the chat will begin in your state.
Hey Everyone!
Tonight, our discussion is sort of like ... INTERNET INCEPTION!
Hehehe. We will be talking about how the internet influences our daily lives. Joining me for the adventure is none other than the wonderful @Myvo.
As always, if you are new to ReachOut or are just need a refresher on what our Community Guidelines are, you can find them here.
If at any stage during this discussion, you feel distressed, overwhelmed or needing to talk to someone during tonight’s conversation, please do not hesitate to contact Lifeline on 13 11 14, or KHL on their chat service (or 1800 55 1800).
So without further ado …
1. We use the wonders of the internet everyday! (But for different purposes, of course). What do you use the internet for?

What don't I use it for? Right now is for talking to you guys and our awesome community. But I am forever looking up gifs, youtube videos, memes and the such.
Then there is netflix, keeping in contact with the fam bam, in fact, it was just today that I had a 4 hr gif off with my sister. She only won because I came online to help facilitate this chat. 😛
So pretty much what everyone else has said, I also look up books I want to read and then go and support my local bookshop.
@Ben-RO if you could eat on the internet, would you?
@stonepixie what like a streaming food service? A Foodify if you will? Hell yes!
@stonepixie @Ben-RO the streaming food idea kinda reminds me of this video I saw the other week 😄 (had to use a link as it won't let me embed the video in my post 😞 )
I need an app that tells me what I have in my pantry. 😞
2. What sorts of websites do you visit daily or on a regular basis?
Facebook, Pinterest, Snapchat (app but whatever) ooooh! New filters! Slack (totally not for slackers). Email. ReachOut, netflix. I think they are the regulars, although youtube is making its way up the list.
And also snapchat, I forgot to add that 😛 my dogs really like it
So it turns out we use a whole range of websites with heaps in common.
Given how readily the internet is available, how do you use it? eg Free wifi in public places, on our phones, computers, laptops, tablets
I have never heard of chromecast until today and I just googled it. 😄
I am liking how the Google searches now feature this box area where it shows the most frequent questions that people usually ask. So then you no longer have to go to a website to find the answer.
See below:
Do you think that using the web and/or different tech services is pretty convenient? Why?
Of course it's convenient - we have the entirety of human knowledge accessible through a little device that fits in our pocket. The only problem is that we've built our society around having internet access which creates havoc when it stops working (even momentarily)! You hear those crazy stories of people calling 000 because Facebook is down and they panic...

That remindes me of the chick who called 911 because the Maccas she went to was out of Chicken Nuggets.
Without the interent, how would we hear about these strange but funny things?

I mostly use it on my laptop and on computers. My phone doesn't have much storage space for apps so I usually just browse on a web browser if I happen to be bored in public. I absolutely rejoice when I'm able to connect to free wifi. Whoever decided to develop this as a marketing tool is a saint.
Fun fact: WiFi is an Australian invention - it was developed by the CSIRO. Pretty cool that we could create something that's now used everyday by people all over the world!
Hm, so it seems that we have some pretty common ways to access the net, and ways that I have never heard of!
Here's our next question.

4. Do you think that using the web and/or different tech services is pretty convenient? Why?
Going online is very convenient because you can access all sorts of information online. For instance, you can find out traffic problems and when roadworks are happening online. I've found that my state (WA) has a website and uses social media like Twitter and FB to let road users know when road works happen.
