[CHAT] Stopping the Procrastination Cycle

If you’ve ever had to do anything ever in your life which you don’t particularly enjoy, then you probably know the feeling. That test is coming up, or that assignment is due soon – you know you’ve got to get to work! You’re so motivated, so ready, and you’re going to smash this out! You get your work out, your stationary, laptop, water, snacks – everything is ready to go!! You’ve started, and you’re working away at those notes, or starting on that assignment!

workworkwork

Then your phone buzzes – a distraction! – and suddenly your initial eagerness to work goes out the window. You check your phone, and then suddenly it’s three hours later and you’ve spent those three hours on YouTube looking at dogs.  At this point it’s almost lunchtime, so you give up and fix yourself a meal. And decide not to acknowledge the work you need to do because you’d rather have a nap, clean the whole house, or re-organise your closet than get back to work (fyi, all things that I’ve done trying to avoid an assignment)

procrastination

Procrastination isn’t just an excuse for laziness – it’s something that we literally need to work on in order to stop ourselves from falling into that trap. Because our brains can be so loud and demanding about not doing That One Thing, not knowing how to not procrastinate makes it so much harder to get things done on time.

And that’s where this GR Session comes in! Join us at 8pm AEST on Monday the 20th of July, to find out how you can learn to stop being anxiety-riddled messes when an assignment, test or other deadline comes around.

@safari93 Yeah that's true at mine too - you've gotta figure out where all the secret study spots are on campus 😉

@Stealth_ninja I have word 2012.

@safari93 I think you're right. It's still close to full screen, so I might use it like that if I can't figure it out 🙂

Where do you usually procrastinate? ie,school, home ect

Mostly at home, it's so easy when there's wifi and a fridge! Although I am perfectly capable of procrastinating away from home, as I discovered at school and at uni

At home, definitely. Where all the distractions are. I have big plans to do things when I get home when I'm at school, then it all disappears...

Where do you usually procrastinate?

Definitely at home. When I've been studying at the library/in any one place for a few hours I start getting bored and craving a change of scenery. My uni has buses which run express between campuses so sometimes I'll hop on that and go to a library at another campus for a "fresh" start

@Bookworm_K236 I think there is a setting where you can hide the margins and menus, but I think that's as full screen as you can get?

@Stealth_ninja I've tried, but it only says I can read in full screen mode

Home, way more than work, or anywhere else. I really love my Job (i get to talk to you folks and build communities!) so it's pretty easy to just get that stuff done. Although sometimes i spend more time talking on the forums and less time doing the other important stuff (although not too much).

Yeah at home, sometimes at uni when its like 6-8pm lecture and I'm just so dead tired and they're going through the content so fast that i usually just listen half heartedly for half an hour and then go home -_-

A kind of relevant question, but does anyone know of a free word processor that goes full screen? Microsoft Word goes full screen, but as far as I know, you can't write in full screen mode. A full screen word processor would really help with avoiding procrastination for me.

I can write in full screen word @Bookworm_K236? Are you sure you can't write in it?

I used the pomodoro technique all the time for my studies! I did it in 10min/50min or 15min/45min intervals instead of having 5min breaks, I also thought it wasn't enough time for me @lokifish

Stealth_ninjaPosted 20-06-2016 09:19 PM

I think i would just end up broke then @Ben-RO OR I'd become so STEALTH I WOULD REALLY BE A STEALTH NINJA

haha yeah i would suggest it but then sometimes it would backfire if they needed to talk to epople from uni or something about the assignments so.. not sure that works

Also I think it was @N1ghtW1ng who recommended the forest app on another thread a while ago. I've used that a few times 🙂

@safari93 Yeah I find that 40-50 mins with a 10-15 minute break works really well most of the time 🙂

@lokifish going to jump on the library bandwagon a bit late but I totally agree about the library suggestion

If you knew someone who was procrastinating right now, how could you get them to stop?

It would probably depend on what they were doing, but if it was something complicated, I would try and help them think up a plan of attack. If it's just a matter of motivation, then taking away whatever is distracting them. I mean, when I was doing my year 12 exams I became responsible for several people's Facebook and Tumblr passwords

I'd try to motivate them as best as I could. Maybe try and help them get rid of distractions / take them to the library.

When I was in high school I would help other people by changing their facebook password for them - I think that counts?

Well i don't like making people do stuff, but i guess i might ask them what i could do to help them cut back? I might offer some kind of accountability thing, like agreeing to ask them how they went, and maybe doing something nice as a reward for hitting whatever goal they had.

I also do a thing when i REALLY have to get somehting done where i offer people a reward of 100 bucks if i'm caught on social media. So maybe i'd do some kind of version of that for someone else 😛

@Stealth_ninja i love that you did that, did you tell them before you did it? hahaha.
