[CHAT] ZZZZZZleep!
Imagine you wake up to the sound of your alarm with only 4 hours of sleep - you feel horrible and tired, not ready to face the day ahead.
OR you’re awakened by the tone of your alarm and you’ve had 8 hours of restored sleep, you wake with a smile and jump out of bed ready to face the day. Which scenario best describes your usual morning awakening?
For most people in this day and age, lack of sleep is becoming popular, with all our busy lives quality of sleep is decreasing as is bad sleep hygiene practices.
Sleep is more than just a resting mechanism it is a way your body biologically repairs and prepares you for the day ahead. It is important for a number of reasons including mental sharpness, emotional stability and physical health. Many disorders and diseases are related to inefficient sleep and poor sleep quality.
Sleep involves 2 main stages, NON-REM (rapid eye movement) and REM sleep. NON-REM occurs first and involves 3 main stages, which are followed by REM stage, when dreaming occurs and your eyes are actually moving back and forth.
The quality of your sleep is just as important as the quantity. One can have 8 hours of sleep but still wake feeling sleep deprived because the quality of their sleep wasn’t ideal.
Join us to discuss all things zzZzzleeep on Monday 28th at 8pm AEST. We want to hear from you, how you feel when you’ve had a good night’s sleep or a terrible pillow-covers-the-face “I don’t want to get out of bed” sleep.
The opposite to a bad night really. I wake up feeling a lot more refreshed, calm and happy when I've had a good night's sleep. I am also a lot happier throughout the day, and am able to focus and concentrate better.
how does it feel when youve had a great nights sleep??
My MH symptoms are less servere, easier to manage, I'm able to function better.
@m-y93
When I get a good night's sleep, everything just flows better the next day. I don't stumble on words like I usually do, I think faster and more coherently AND I'm less susceptible to negativity in life. Getting good sleep is so important that I constantly wonder why I haven't been doing so for around half my life now.
When I was younger I had to sleep with my door open and the hall light on. And now I sleep with my door closed and no lights. How the times have changed 🙂
@hartley_ 🙂 hope for the best!
How do you feel when you havent had enough sleep?
When I do get less than my usual 8 hours I'm okay with it. Which has happened recently due to me having a shower at 3am... but that's another story... anyways, I feel the same because of the bad quality of my sleep.
@N1ghtW1ng hopefully after this session you'll have a different view on sleep and get some form of relieve from advice shared from others
Grumpy/irritable/cranky, can't concentrate, anxious, a bit spaced out, tired and just generally lacking in motivation.
Welcome everyone to tonight's Getting Real session on sleep! We are going to discuss the importance of sleep in our lives and how it makes us feel.
We hope you can all stay awake for it because we'd love your input on the topic.
Just a friendly reminder to make sure everything runs smoothly please keep to the forum guidelines and should you need to talk to someone there are emergency numbers in the top right.
To start off our night:
1. What does a good nights sleep mean to you? Everyone is different - how many hours is ideal for you?
Hi all! 🙂
What does a good nights sleep mean to you? Everyone is different - how many hours is ideal for you?\
A good nights sleep for me entails falling asleep easily, not waking up or experiencing insomnia or anxiety and getting ideally between 8 and 9 hours. 🙂
welcome @delicatedreamer sounds pretty good!! 8-9 hours is a preferred amount
failing asleep like a baby is always the best sleep for me personally
A good night's sleep is one that leaves you feeling refreshed and alert to be functional for the day's tasks. Different people have different requirements. Some make do with 6, some need 9 at the very least to even think properly. Quality of sleep is important too, as 9 hours of interrupted sleep is as good as a mere 5 or 6. Quality of sleep can be affected by mood, physical feeling and health as well as even what you're sleeping on. Every little bit counts towards giving your body ample rest to repair and energise.
Needless to say, many people struggle to get 5 hours in. Including myself.
@mango_splice thanks for joining us
You sound like you know a lot about sleep!
Do you have trouble sleeping too?
What kind of things prevent you from having the good, restful sleep we all crave!?
Let me begin by saying that I've never so much as had a sleep 'pattern'. I just collapse onto the couch when I'm tired enough.
My mind's always been too active, so I often don't catch some good shuteye. If I do though, I'm likely to get nightmares. Usually when I'm working on assignments or cramming study, I'll get too tired and just shut down, only to wake up in about several hours and freak out. It's extra tough then because I have to force myself to work again while everything's hazy. I can drink heavily and get more done than after I've just woken up from a nap.
Also, I really need to get a better pillow and stop sleeping on the couch. My current pillow's too high and given that I'm a fairly short person (5'4"), it's as good as sleeping on the couch.
@mango_splice Sounds like you need some new sleep habits! Im tired even hearing about you collapsing after working hard on homework
Things like doing homework, watching tv or doing strenuous exercise before bed can really stimulate your mind a bit too much right before bed
Some things that could improve your sleep (and maybe even stop some nightmares when you wakeup anxious or in a panic) are read a book before bed or listen to some calming music, make sure your bed and pillows are comfy! and that your room is nice and dark, not too hot not too cold.
Meditation and relaxation techniques can help you get nice and relaxed before bed!
Hey @redhead
Glad you could join us for our session on SLEEP!
One thing we all love but sometimes are too busy for!
What does a good nights sleep mean to you? Everyone is different - how many hours is ideal for you?
I personally love sleep, any less than 6 or 7 hours and I am a big baby all day!
I hate feeling tired or sluggish - feeling like I cant do everything I want to in the day because Im nodding off
and I think I am guilty of getting a bit grumpy too when I am lacking sleep!
Ideally for me 6-7 hours i'm good with, anymore or anyless my body doesn't like. Having good sleep is very important it affects me mentally, physically and even just makes me feel crap when i haven't had enough.
Can I please order a Trenta?
In all seriousness, I can't remember what it is like to have a good night sleep. But it would definitely be a night where I don't wake up and feel refreshed.

I make sure that I get at least 8 hours sleep a night. Probably one of the few teenagers who actually sleep at night.
welcome @N1ghtW1ng and @mango_splice thanks for joining us!
sleep definitely differs between people but i think we've all appreciated the importance in plays in our daily lives

do you love sleep too?!
