[CHAT] zzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZSleep

Sleep is more than just a resting mechanism it is a way your body biologically repairs and prepares you for the day ahead. It is important for a number of reasons including mental sharpness, emotional stability and physical health. Many disorders and diseases are related to inefficient sleep and poor sleep quality.

I once heard someone say that they hated sleep because it was boring and a waste of time. I just could not wrap my head around that. Sleep is so essential it is like the best way to forget all your problems for a while (unless they creep up into your dreams) and it is also an amazing way to gain energy and reboot the system. Without a proper night's rest, you find people sleeping in very strange places like benches, on the trains, at work, in toilets or at school, how awkward!! 🙂

So this week, we are going to talk about sleep, how can we make sure to get amazing sleep everyday and we will talk about the impact sleep has on us. Come and share your stories about sleep and how you manage sleep and mental health.

There are some people that believe, sleeping is for the weak, not knowing that sleep could save your life. Having poor sleeping patterns increases the risk of having high blood pressure, heart attacks, heart failure, strokes and not to mention a major impact on your mental health. Have you ever noticed that when you don't get sleep, you are easily annoyed, say/do things you wouldn't do and make lots of mistakes, being clumsy, lose concentration. Sleep affects so many different areas in our lives.

Join us to discuss all things zzZzzSLEEP on Monday 15th June at 8pm AEST. We want to hear from you, how you feel when you’ve had a good night’s sleep or a terrible pillow-covers-the-face “I don’t want to get out of bed” sleep.

5. What are some of the ways you ensure to get the right amount of sleep?

Since I pretty much always wake up at around 6:30-7:00 or earlier and no later than 7:30 I usually go to bed at 8:30 because it takes me a while to get to sleep since I'm pretty energetic even though I don't look like it!Man Wink

I don't really use my phone in bed and I don't drink any caffeinated drinks so I guess it's just because I'm so restless!

Hahaha Rest - Less!Smiley LOL

I don't know why I found that so funny.Smiley Very Happy

What are some of the ways you ensure to get the right amount of sleep?

I time myself like if I can get 7.5 hours of sleep then I am happy. I tell myself ok sleep at this time and then wake up at this time. I also give myself 30mins extra in the morning so I can go back and sleep if I need it.

If I cant sleep then I turn up my electric blankey and that helps and sometimes a glass of some nice alcohol helps, not all the time though.

5. What are some of the ways you ensure to get the right amount of sleep?

Years ago I heard from some sleep show that looking at the bright screens etc can make it harder for you to sleep so I always try and limit what I do before bed time. I've found if I stop using the computer at least half an hour before I go to bed it really helps me undwind and relax, making it easier to sleep. It means I don't spend an hour or more laying in bed trying to fall asleep and wasting time.

it sort of sounds to me like lots of you guys have "sleeping rituals" like...

dinner.

relax.

no tv/phone/caffeine.

chuck a lecture on

BAM SLEEP

or like

shower

pjs

bed

stare at the roof

BAM SLEEP

so the next question:

What are your sleeping rituals you do before you go to bed? If someone said go to bed RIGHT NOW... what would you do?

First I would make some tea and get a drink of water

Sort out my stuff for tomorrow and tidy my room in the process

Go to the toilet

Turn on my electric blanket

Go through my phone for a bit making sure everything is sorted

Then sleep 😄

hahaha, years age i would recommend a foreign film without sound, but somehow the films nowadays are actually getting interesting, so it might give the opposite effect.

I'm going to answer my own question and say my sleeping ritual is:

  1. put the dogs to bed
  2. clean my teeth
  3. brush my hair
  4. plug my phone in and do a last phone check
  5. stretch a bit and get comfy in bed
  6. attempt sleep in the dark with no outside sounds (really annoys me if i can hear the dryer or heater on!)

Wow yours are so different to mine.

Probably because I can function on less and don't need as much as you guys. I've never had chamomile tea but I've heard it's good for putting people to sleep.

@ruenhonx I'm not really a mint person, can't stand it!

Wander around and try to make excuses not to go to bed because I know I'll just sit/lay there and be bored for hours.  Then brush my teeth as another excuse not to go to be,  say a slow goodnight and then proceed to my room finding every little distraction to stop me from going to my bed and being bored.

When I finally get to bed I think about all the work I haven't done, things I could have done better, how my Mum is going to flip when she sees my report and so on until after a couple of hours I fall asleep.

Unless it's Monday where I say goodnight and then come here and chat!Smiley Wink

I guess I also avoid it because I think of all the bad stuff that's happened, is happening and is going to happen which is what I'm doing right now to be honest. (gonna get a really bad semester report and don't want mum to see it)

I also listen to music @j95. Usually songs I can relate to like 'Who Knew' by Pink.
