What are you afraid of?

My name is Chelsea and I am afraid of storms, fire and spiders. What are you afraid of?? We all have fears, some of them may be really common (e.g. heights, snakes, injections) or they may be uncommon (the list is endless).  It doesn't really matter what your fear is - what matters is how we cope with these fears. If they are impacting on your everyday life, it's time to do something about them and while talking to a health professional is a great idea, there are also a few practical things that you can do to help yourself when you are faced with those fears. We are going to be discussing some of these practical tips and while our discussion may not be quite as amusing as the following video, we will keep it upbeat, positive and we definitely won't judge your fear/s!

Monday 23 September at 8pm right here, to discuss your fears in a supportive environment, and learn some tips from other people who know how you feel!!

Hope you can join us.

Also, it might help to have a read of this story, about how one person overcame their fear! http://au.reachout.com/The-strange-fear

And check out this fact sheet for more info on phobias (http://au.reachout.com/What-is-a-phobia )

That's a good one Chonty 🙂 All of mine seem pretty bland in comparison!

Thanks for sharing with us guys,

When did you first realised you have this particular fear? Was it an accidental and/or surprising discovery?

My fear of holes was always a sneaky suspicion when i randomly came across an article about trypophobia and locus flower in the Sydney Morning Herald and it all made sense!! So, it was in a sense accidental discovery

Hello ReachOut.com community!

Welcome to the Getting Real session on fears and phobias.

Tonight, I am co-faciliated by michine, sophie-RO and myself.

We will be talking about different phobias and how different people cope with the things they fear in their day-to-day life.

Have a look at this fact sheet to get an idea of what would qualify a phobia.

If you feel unsettled or upset during this discussion, please don’t hesitate to step away from the convo for a bit. Or try a relaxation session on Smiling Mind http://smilingmind.com.au/

Finally, please stick to the community guidelines when posting in today’s GR.

Ok, here’s our first Question to you!

1. Do you have a fear of something? If so, see if you could find the "official" name on this list and share it here!

Hi Guys 🙂

Eager to hear some of your fears.

The one that pops to mind is:

@Tesla: That's definitely something I struggle with as well, which usually manifests as procrastination.

I'm scared of falling, things being disorganised, walking alone in the dark, loud unexpected noises & big dogs.

Fear of failing seems like a common one!

I have a friend who is afraid of balloons... Well, them popping anyway - that's a bit like your loud unexpected noises?

Ohhh DD fear of vomiting... yes thats yucky, you are probably not alone there... Though not the cast of Geordie Shore...

Hi Doris (and everyone else) 🙂

Do you have a fear of something? If so, see if you could find the "official" name on this list and share it here!

My fears would fall under emetophobia and agoraphobia on that list I think.

Thanks Sophie :). Emetophobia is a fear of vomiting. I'm not a fan of it at all (I don't think anyone is!). I used to have a huge fear of needles but I'm pretty good with them now (was in hospital a bit when I was 16 so I got used to them).

@T-W: I have a fear of failure too! I think a lot of people can relate to that.

I'm not sure if I am afraid of failure, it seems likely why I was so anxious before uni started, and was a big factor as to why I withdrew from my course...

Atychiphobia- Fear of failure.

Of course, the real problem was my concentration, and not being able to read or study, so having a fear of failing was probably reasonably healthy.

When I was younger I had a fear of the dark, of needles. The first was due to nightmares, and the shapes trees make at night time. And the second was when I had the biggest needle for when I had a huge gash on my forehead. I looked a bit like harry potter for a little while...

Hey Sophie

When I was younger. I was also scared of blood test and I also kicked a doctor or rather doctors (I needed 7 adults to hold me down for my first blood test).

I am a bit wary of spiders, tho I don't think I have a phobia of them.

However, I have a phobia of many small, clustered holes. => Trypophobia

Hey everyone, really interested to hear from people tonight, hope it's a bit busier than last week!

I have a fear of spiders, and when i was younger it was really abd and quite irrational. Like I couldn't be in the same room as a daddy long legs with the door shut! Also when I was younger I had a fear of blood tests and needles at the doctors. (I kicked a doctor once who was trying to jab me!!!! I was about 7)

Welcome back!
